Glonn combines cultural and historical attractions with named hiking options. This distinction can help you choose your destination: are you mainly interested in architectural and art history, or would you like to plan a circular route with an approximate duration? This allows you to balance culture and exercise according to your interests.

Church and Art in Glonn

St. John the Baptist is a Rococo church built in 1778. Its furnishings include altar figures and a crucifix featuring the “Sorrowful Mother of God” by Joseph Götsch. Götsch was a pupil of Ignaz Günther. The year of construction places the church in its historical context, while the reference to the crucifix establishes a specific connection to art history and Götsch.

Monastery School and Local History

The monastery school in Glonn houses the local history museum in its attic; it is also home to the Kultur- und Verschönerungsverein’s Klosterschule Gallery. The museum presents numerous pictures, works of art and everyday objects from earlier times, offering insight into the history of this historic town. Since 1983, in addition to the annual exhibitions, 32 other events have been held in the monastery school’s rooms, including art exhibitions, lectures and commemorative exhibitions. The museum, gallery and history of events illustrate different cultural aspects of this building.

Hikes: Comparing Distance and Duration

Handy-Weg 1 is a circular route of about 10 km, taking approximately 2.5 hours. It is also suitable for families with children. Another option is the “From Glonn to Unterelkofen” hiking route, which includes a 10.3 km section. The figures describe different features: for Handy-Weg, the distance and time refer to the circular route; for the route to Unterelkofen, the distance refers to one section of the route. This makes it possible to estimate how long the circular route takes, while the other figure specifies a particular section of the route.

Local History Museum Opening Hours

The Glonn local history museum is scheduled to be open on the first Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.; it is closed in January, August and September. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Additional Attractions in the Wider Ebersberg Destination

In the wider Ebersberg destination, there is an observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest. Climbing its 169 steps rewards visitors with views across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on especially clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can even be seen. The Museum Wald und Umwelt has also stood directly beside the Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology.

Environmental education in the wider Ebersberg destination also includes the Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre, which has been awarded the Bavarian quality seal “Umweltbildung.Bayern”. Events there focus on education for sustainable development and take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest. Visits for school classes and other groups are possible. The observation tower, forest ecology and environmental education therefore offer different areas of interest from Glonn’s church, local history and hiking options.
