Grafing near Munich offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: architectural history and art, seasonal traditions, and nature and cycling. Nearby, Elkofen Castle adds to the cultural attractions. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.

Architectural history and art in Grafing

The Market Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1672. The town hall is the only Baroque town hall in the Ebersberg district. At the Gefreites Haus, the focus is on architectural development: in 1745, it was almost entirely rebuilt, largely in the form familiar today. Together, the three buildings offer different starting points for exploring Grafing’s history.

The Museum of the City of Grafing also combines art with local connections. Its permanent exhibitions include religious folk art and a 14-panel reverse-glass Stations of the Cross by Alfred Schöpffe (1917–1992), a painter from Grafing. The museum also owns oil paintings and lithographs by Max Joseph Wagenbauer (1775–1829), a landscape painter from Grafing and a widely known artist of the Munich School. The collection thus brings together different art forms and the life stories of two artists with ties to Grafing.

Guided tours and seasonal events

Grafing’s 2026 town tour program includes 30 dates from March onward, covering a total of eight topics. These include local history, the flora and fauna of the Grafing area, and the regional economy as part of the culinary tours. The program therefore ranges from local history and nature to insights into the regional economy. Information about the town tours covers the topics, booking private group tours, advance ticket outlets and tour guides. Topics and dates are subject to change, so check the latest dates and booking information before making plans.

A distinctive seasonal event is the traditional Leonhardi ride, which still takes place in Grafing on the last Sunday in October. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event day in advance. The apothecary garden in Grafing’s town park offers another area of interest, providing information about the ingredients and uses of various medicinal plants.

Landscape, nature and cycling

Grafing is 518 m above sea level. Its setting is characterized by a valley open to the south and a hilly terminal moraine landscape in the surrounding area. Grafing offers a wide range of activities for hikers and nature lovers. The town park and its apothecary garden add information about medicinal plants to these nature-related attractions.

A well-developed network of cycle paths extends through Grafing and its surroundings, as well as throughout the region east of Munich. It is suitable for short and longer rides, and Grafing makes a good starting point. You can choose how much cycling to include in your trip, depending on the distance you plan to cover.

Elkofen Castle nearby

Elkofen Castle is in Unterelkofen, two kilometers south of Grafing town center, and is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. The castle is surrounded by a wide, deep moat, which was once filled with water. Its location nearby sets it apart from the buildings within Grafing itself and makes it a distinct cultural point of interest when planning your trip.
