Fischach lies in the heart of the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park. At the same time, the village and municipality are home to historic cultural sites, church art and a natural swimming pool. This means trip planning can cover a range of themes: preserved evidence of Jewish life, art in churches and a natural landscape that shapes Fischach’s setting.

Culture and History in Fischach

About 400 of the original 420 graves are preserved in the Jewish cemetery in Fischach; many of the inscriptions are still legible. These two figures give a concrete impression of what has been handed down: the number of graves describes what has been preserved, while the legible inscriptions add another dimension to this place of remembrance.

The parish church of St. Michael features stucco work by Joseph Meitinger and ceiling frescoes by Franz Martin Kuen. These represent two different forms of church decoration: stucco is sculpted ornament, while ceiling frescoes are paintings on the ceiling. The church can therefore be appreciated both for its use of form and for its visual art.

St. Leonhard’s Chapel on Augsburger Straße is framed by two old lime trees. It was built in the 17th century, presumably in honour of St. Leonhard. Elsewhere, the Thoma lime tree commemorates Leonhard Thoma: it stands where Blumenstraße and Triebgasse meet Hauptstraße. Thoma was born in Fischach in 1864 and went on to become a significant church painter. The chapel’s dedication remains a supposition; the memorial to Thoma is linked to his birthplace and later work.

Buschelberg also bears a distinctive mark of history: the remains of one of the largest hillforts in Bavarian Swabia are located on the hill. The reference to a hillfort draws attention to archaeological evidence, while the cemetery, church, chapel and memorial tree illustrate different forms of cultural heritage in Fischach.

Natural Setting, Swimming Pool and Getting There

Fischach’s location in the heart of the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park provides its scenic setting. The Fischach natural swimming pool is a specific place to relax outdoors. Its grounds cover 28,000 square metres, and the swimming area has a water surface of 2,400 square metres. These figures refer to two different areas: the entire grounds and the water surface.

Regional bus services connect Fischach with Gessertshausen and Augsburg, as well as with SchwabmĂĽnchen and Bobingen via Mickhausen. The right service for your journey depends on your direction of travel. Check the current timetables before travelling.

More Places in the Municipality of Fischach

The Mozart House stands in Heimberg, a hamlet of Fischach, and is associated with verifiable direct ancestors of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ändris Motzhart was already living in the house associated with the Mozart House in 1486.

In Siegertshofen, also within the municipality, the parish church of St. Nicholas houses a late Gothic Coronation of the Virgin. The Sebastian Chapel there was endowed in 1690; it contains a wooden figure of St. Sebastian in the characteristic style of Lorenz Luidl. The Coronation of the Virgin and the figure of St. Sebastian offer art enthusiasts two distinct works of sacred art in Siegertshofen.

In the Wider Augsburg Destination

The wider Augsburg destination offers more options for enjoying nature and art. The Bonstetten LandArt Art Trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular walking route. Along the trail, the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. Here, a stated circular route length goes hand in hand with artworks accompanied by personal explanations.

The three-kilometre Meditation Trail runs from the Cistercian convent of Oberschönenfeld to Weiherhof, along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. Unlike the circular route in Bonstetten, it connects two named destinations. At three kilometres, it is shorter than the LandArt Art Trail; its length and route type offer a concrete comparison between the two options.

The Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park also includes the Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions. The district of Augsburg has a well-developed network of cycle paths. Westwood Alpacas also offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. These regional options complement Fischach’s local cultural and natural attractions with more routes and activities in the Augsburg destination.
