Stadtbergen offers three distinct themes to explore during a stay: church architecture, art and leisure. Particularly striking are the elevated churches in Stadtbergen and Leitershofen. There is also an exhibition of reverse glass painting, an art space and a sculpture park. Public transport is also useful when planning your visit: large parts of Stadtbergen are served by tram lines 2 and 6, as well as various bus lines.

Churches as landmarks

The parish church of St. Nicholas stands on a hill and is considered the city’s centrepiece and landmark; it also appears on the city’s coat of arms. It was built in 1730/31 on the site of an earlier late Gothic church. Inside, the single-nave hall, recessed choir and ceiling paintings by the artists Bergmüller and Albrecht shape the impression. In this way, the building’s history is combined with a clearly identifiable design of the church interior.

In Leitershofen, the Baroque St. Oswald’s Church, with its richly appointed interior, stands on Kirchberg, slightly above the original village centre. It was built in 1732 to plans by Füssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer. In 1928, it was extended by one bay, before undergoing extensive restoration from 1979 to 1983. It has not been a parish church since 1970; the rosary is regularly prayed there and an evening Mass is held. The building’s history and its present-day religious use are therefore two distinct aspects of this place.

Art from collections to the sculpture park

The Dr. Georg Frank Altenhilfe Foundation in Stadtbergen has housed the permanent exhibition “Art Behind Glass” by the Hilda Sandtner Foundation since 2006. It comprises 63 international reverse glass paintings spanning four centuries, from the 17th to the 20th century. The Am Pfarrhof Leitershofen art space has a different focus: it exhibits contemporary art in the forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and photography. Together, these two offerings span a range from a historical art technique to various contemporary forms of expression.

Another art form can be found in the sculpture park on August-Abenstein-Weg. Every three years, the finalists in the citywide Stadtbergen sculpture prize, open to entrants from across Bavaria, are presented there. Unlike the reverse glass painting exhibition, the focus here is a recurring competition; its three-year cycle is a practical point of reference if you would like to include this offering in your plans.

Leisure and transport planning

Stadtbergen has a pump track for mountain bikes and skateboards, a Kneipp facility and a 9-hole golf course. These offer a range of activities, from riding the pump track to Kneipp treatments and golf. You can take into account which of these matter to you when choosing your destination and accommodation.

Large parts of Stadtbergen are served by tram lines 2 and 6, as well as various bus lines operated by the Augsburg public transport company. Check the latest route and timetable information before travelling. This lets you factor your specific connection into your plans without assuming that the whole area is served in the same way.

Choose accommodation to suit your plans

When looking for a hotel in Stadtbergen, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: are you mainly interested in churches and art, or would you also like to plan some leisure activities? You can then take your specific destinations and the relevant transport connections into account. The city thus offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip, without requiring one set itinerary for every visitor.
