Adelsried combines cycling and walking routes with a distinctive connection to the railway: the Weldenbahn Cycle Path follows the foundations of the Weldenbahn, built in 1903, while two circular walking routes offer different distances and a clearly defined thematic focus. This distinction can help with planning: cycling centers on the former railway line, while walkers can choose between a route featuring wayside crosses and a shorter loop. The wider Augsburg destination also offers other independent nature and cultural attractions.

Cycle path along the former railway line

In the Adelsried area, the Weldenbahn Cycle Path runs away from the roads through forests and fields. The route leads to Aystetten, Horgau, Adelsried and Welden, following the foundations of the Weldenbahn, built in 1903. The former railway route gives the cycle path a historical connection; forests and fields also describe the landscape it passes through in the Adelsried area. At the Bahnhäusle rest stop on the cycle path in Adelsried, the rest train is called “Adelheide.” It was introduced as new in 2025.

Walks by theme and distance

Walkers can choose between two circular routes with clearly distinct details. The “Wayside Crosses Tell Their Stories – Eastern Route” covers 9.02 kilometers around Adelsried and focuses on wayside crosses. The Hans Malzer Trail is also a circular walking route around Adelsried and is 5.7 kilometers long. The Eastern Route is therefore the longer of the two named loops, and its focus on wayside crosses is explicitly stated. Comparing distance and theme offers practical guidance when choosing a route. Adelsried is also part of the Holzwinkel and Altenmünster walking trail network, which includes themed routes with different focuses.

A historic site in the surrounding area

In the destination’s surrounding area is the “Mary, Protector of Travelers” church, located at the Adelsried exit on the A8 between Munich and Stuttgart. In 1958, it became Germany’s first motorway church. This adds a distinct cultural and historical connection to the routes: the church represents the history of motorway churches, while the Eastern Route focuses on wayside crosses.

More routes in the wider Augsburg destination

The wider Augsburg destination expands the options with independent nature and cultural attractions. The district of Augsburg has a well-developed network of cycling paths. The LandArt Art Trail in Bonstetten is a 5.65-kilometer circular walking route. Along the trail, artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures, giving the loop its own artistic theme.

A different focus awaits on the three-kilometer Meditation Trail. It runs along the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley, from Oberschönenfeld Abbey to Weiherhof. The Meditation Trail is shorter than the LandArt Art Trail; the two routes also differ in theme. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and outings through the nature park. The wider Augsburg destination thus includes these nature-based activities alongside cycling and walking routes.
