Walkertshofen brings together a church building visible from afar and the river landscape of the Neufnach. The Catholic parish church of St. Alban stands on a hill in the heart of the village; Walkertshofen lies on both sides of the river. This gives you a range of ways to shape your stay: architectural history in the village and nature by the water.

St. Alban: from Romanesque origins to the Late Gothic tower

With its distinctive tower, St. Alban is the landmark of Walkertshofen. The unplastered tower is just under 40 metres high and dates from the Late Gothic building period. The church’s history goes back further: a Romanesque church was built on this site in the 12th century, most likely by the local nobility of the time. Parts of the nave’s north wall still date from this first building period. St. Alban thus brings together different phases of construction: its Romanesque beginnings, preserved in parts of the north wall, and the Late Gothic tower.

The church is visible from afar and helps orient you in the village. If you are interested in architecture, it is worth considering the details of its origins and later additions as distinct chapters in its history. The striking tower remains a prominent landmark, while the Romanesque remains point to a much earlier building period.

The Neufnach and its surroundings

On the southern edge of the village, the Neufnach underwent extensive renaturation in 2022. A straightened stream channel was transformed into a natural watercourse with many ecologically enhanced areas. The fish ladder offers another way to enjoy the water: there is a small resting area with a bench where you can watch the Neufnach and its aquatic life. Walkertshofen lies in the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park.

There are various options for a break by the water and for longer routes. The Staudenparadies on the connecting road to Grimoldsried is suitable for a short walk or as a refreshment stop on a longer hike. The Stauden Meditation Trail also passes through Walkertshofen, among other places. Its nine stations are based on the wisdom teachings of the world’s major religions and invite you to pause and meditate. While the Staudenparadies is a place for a short walk or a break during a longer hike, the meditation trail’s stations give your journey a distinct thematic focus.

Places for events and stays

The former Raiffeisen warehouse is also part of the village’s history: it features a building type that is now rare, combining architecture, use and location within the municipality. The warehouse houses the Bürgersaal (community hall). It can be booked through the municipality of Walkertshofen for cultural, club and private events; availability may change. A large playground has been built in the green space behind the warehouse, which serves as an event hall.

Walkertshofen brings together a range of themes: the history of St. Alban, the restored river landscape, and places for walks, hikes or meditation. You can choose what to focus on, whether architectural history, nature by the water or getting active outdoors.
