Two historic routes provide a clear framework for a walk around Gammertingen: one is about 1 kilometer long and leads through the Old Town, while the other covers about 3 kilometers and reaches sights outside the historic town center. There is also a museum with changing exhibitions and nature activities in the Lauchert Valley. This lets you explore the historic town layout and the surrounding landscape as different focuses of your stay.

Historic Routes and Town Layout

Historic Route 1 begins at the Speth’sche Stadtschloss, now the town hall, and follows clearly marked paths through the historic Old Town. Along the approximately 1-kilometer route, you will encounter remnants of the town wall and moat. The approximately 3-kilometer Route 2 starts at the Old Brewery and leads to sights outside the historic town center. The distances and destinations make it easy to compare: a shorter route through the Old Town or a longer walk to places beyond the historic center.

The historic town was laid out in the 12th or 13th century on flood-free tuff terraces west of the Lauchert. The rectangular area measures 175 × 200 meters and was originally surrounded by a continuous town wall; the layout is still recognizable today. The Speth’sche Stadtschloss was built in 1775 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an earlier castle dating from the 13th century and now serves as the town hall.

Museum in the Old District Office

The Museum in the Old District Office collects and researches the history of Gammertingen and the region, and presents it in changing exhibitions. It is located on the second floor of the historic Old District Office, built in 1724/25. The working group organizes two to three exhibitions a year in the museum’s rooms. A visit therefore brings together local and regional history, with the changing exhibitions regularly offering different perspectives.

Lauchert Valley, Cross-Country Skiing and Recreation

Gammertingen lies in the Lauchert Valley. Together with the adjacent high plateaus of the Swabian Jura, the valley is a popular local recreation area thanks to its extensive forests and invigorating climate. The landscape offers a different focus from the historic Old Town: here, the valley and forests take center stage, while the routes explore the town layout and its history.

There are five newly created cross-country ski trails in the outlying districts, with a total length of just under 23 kilometers. When snow conditions permit, they can be used for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. If cross-country skiing is important to your travel plans, take snow conditions into account when choosing when to visit.

A Kneipp facility is located on the Lauchert, between central Gammertingen and the district of Bronnen. It has been in place for more than 80 years, has been completely renovated and expanded with additional leisure and recreational facilities. As the condition of a facility can change, it is best to check before your visit.

The municipal trekking camp is set in the natural surroundings of the Fehlatal Valley. Its stated opening period is May to October, and bookings are made online only. Check the latest opening and booking information before planning to make sure the seasonal schedule fits your stay.
