Hiking trails with different highlights
The 17.5 km “Discover Schwenningen...” history and nature trail runs from the Werenwager Straße car park to the Horn playground and back through the village to the starting point. There are 29 information boards along the route. The trail combines natural history and local history in a clearly marked circular route.
Five circular trails run through the Danube Valley, with routes ranging in length from 6 to 17.5 km. They range from a shorter loop to a longer tour; use the distance to choose the option that suits your day’s plans. As trail conditions may vary, it is worth checking the latest information for each trail before setting out.
The adventure trail around Schwenningen offers a different focus: it passes St. Anthony’s Chapel, as well as the Wendelinus and Lourdes chapels. The three chapels give this trail a cultural theme, while the five circular trails can be distinguished by their length and location in the Danube Valley.
Local history and an outdoor exhibition
At the parish church of St. Columban, the lower part of the church tower dates from the 12th century and the upper part from the 17th century. These two distinct periods come together in one church tower, offering a tangible starting point for exploring Schwenningen’s architectural history.
The Schwenningen Straw Park is an outdoor exhibition of straw figures on a meadow near the Heuberghalle, in the direction of Stetten am kalten Markt. It adds a distinctive open-air exhibition to the area’s trails and religious landmarks. The exhibition site is further identified by its location near the Heuberghalle and the direction given.
Landscape and the seasons
The Schwenningen Stations of the Cross is also a circular trail. It takes in landscape features in and around Schwenningen and offers views of the village. The focus here is on the landscape and views of the village. The “Blue Flower” also blooms in its natural surroundings in the Finstertal valley near Schwenningen, adding a poetic touch to the landscape.
In winter, the Schwenningen cross-country ski trail offers various routes from 1 to 12 km at elevations between 810 and 950 m above sea level. It is possible to connect to the Nusplingen trail. Unlike the hiking trails, this activity depends on snow, and the current trail status may also vary. Check the status before making the trail a fixed part of your plans.
Culture in the wider destination of Sigmaringen
In the wider destination of Sigmaringen, Sigmaringen Castle developed from a medieval fortress into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Castle tours present almost 1,000 years of the history of the House of Hohenzollern. The castle is therefore a cultural and historical highlight in its own right in Sigmaringen.
