Sauldorf’s series of gravel pits provides a distinctive landmark in the landscape. Another specific consideration for planning a trip is the historic railway line, which was reactivated in July 2021. The lakes and railway serve different purposes: the lakes invite visitors to spend time outdoors, while the railway line is relevant to travel planning.
Gravel Pits in the Municipality of Sauldorf
The municipality is home to the four Sauldorf gravel pits and the five former Schwackenreuter gravel pits, which lie one after another in a row. The described lake landscape therefore comprises two groups of bodies of water. The designation “former” applies to the Schwackenreuter gravel pits and should be kept in mind when finding your way around.
One of the former Schwackenreuter gravel pits is designated as a swimming lake. A shady meadow is suitable for picnics and swimming breaks. So, in addition to the lake chain as a landscape feature, there are also specific opportunities for a break by the water. Check local conditions before visiting.
Railway Line and Travel Planning
The historic railway line between Radolfzell, Stockach, Sauldorf, MeĂźkirch, and Mengen was reactivated in July 2021. These places indicate the route of the connection; for a specific journey, consult the current timetable and connection information.
When deciding what to focus on during your stay, Sauldorf offers two different starting points: the lakes in the municipality, including their designated swimming area, and the railway line as part of the local transport connections. If you plan to spend most of your time by the water, you can take the described uses into account; if you plan to arrive by train, check the connection for your travel date.
Culture and Excursions in the Wider Sigmaringen Destination
In the wider Sigmaringen destination, Sigmaringen Castle is a historic highlight in its own right. The castle developed from a medieval fortress into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the city. Castle tours offer insight into almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history. The castle is home to a private arms collection of around 3,000 objects.
Sigmaringen’s various museums offer further insights. The Zündapp Museum at the Zoller-Hof Brewery is located in the Marstall building at Fürst-Wilhelm-Straße 5–7 and displays more than 100 exhibits from the motorcycle brand. The Round Tower was built as a defensive tower in the old city fortifications and was converted into a local history museum in 1970. The local history museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.
Sigmaringen also offers a range of outdoor activities. The city lies in the Upper Danube Nature Park on the edge of the Swabian Alb; the Danube flows through a landscape shaped by cliffs and forests. The five Sigmaringen premium hiking trails known as the DonauFelsenLäufe run through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley, and the Lauchert Valley. The Danube Cycle Route, which passes through Sigmaringen, offers a different experience: hiking and cycling are two distinct ways to explore the region.
For a cultural city visit, the old town lies at the foot of Hohenzollern Castle. City and themed tours offer a closer look at Sigmaringen; public city tours are also offered monthly. The “Stadtführung Sigmaringen” app lets visitors and locals explore the city’s history interactively and at their own pace. Check tour dates and digital offerings in advance. The railway station is centrally located in the city center, and several city bus routes provide additional local transport; timetables and routes may change.
A culinary highlight is the Sigmaringen weekly market, with regional baked goods, meat and sausage products, fruit and vegetables, cheese, olive oil, and honey. The events calendar also offers dates to plan around: The annual Fidelis Festival includes a church service at St. Johann Parish Church on April 24, followed by a candlelight procession through the city center. The city festival takes place every year on the last weekend of June. In winter, Sigmaringen holds SIG on ICE on the market square every December and January; from mid-December, skating enthusiasts can skate there for four weeks. Seasonal dates and programs may vary from year to year.
