Chapels, viewpoints and cycling routes give Hohentengen a clear focus for a stay that combines culture and outdoor activities. The town is also known locally as Göge and is a small centre in the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region. Hohentengen has approximately 4,200 residents and lies at an elevation of 564 to 594 metres above sea level in a glacial terminal moraine landscape. This offers two perspectives for planning a trip: local architectural and commemorative history, and options for walks, cycling tours and viewpoints. Hohentengen is also considered a convenient base for excursions to the Danube Valley, across the Swabian Alb and to Lake Constance, the Allgäu and the Alps.

Landscape and Views

Kugelberg, above Hohentengen, offers views across the Danube and Ostrach valleys towards the Swabian Alb. It lies on the southern edge of the Danube Basin. The view from the hill complements the town’s elevation and moraine landscape with a specific point of reference: here, the valleys and the Alb stand out as sights to look towards.

Churches and Local History

St. Michael’s Church was built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1848 and 1852 on the site of an earlier church. The Marienkapelle chapel on the Steige is more than 500 years old and was once a frequently visited place of pilgrimage. The two religious buildings represent different historical periods: St. Michael’s as a new church built in the 19th century, and the Marienkapelle as a testament to a much older religious history. Commemorative plaques at the northern entrance to the cemetery recall the 1799 meeting in Hohentengen. The buildings’ construction dates, the chapel’s former importance as a pilgrimage destination and the commemorations offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

Chapel Routes on Foot

All the chapels in the Göge area can be reached via well-maintained footpaths; some sections follow paved side roads. The municipal chapel tour includes several viewpoints. Those travelling on foot can therefore include both chapels and views in their plans. Before setting out, check the current route and local conditions, as footpath infrastructure and access to viewpoints may change.

Cycling Tours and Route Lengths

For cyclists, two route lengths are clearly distinguished: the municipal chapel cycling tour is listed as approximately 15.5 kilometres, while an additional tour covers around four kilometres. This shorter tour passes the Enzkofer Berg recreation area and a viewpoint at the water reservoir. These details provide a direct comparison of the route lengths and the destinations mentioned. Before setting out, check the current route and local conditions.

Getting There and the Wider Region

Hohentengen can be reached via the B32 towards Mengen. As road information may change due to construction work or traffic restrictions, it is advisable to check current traffic conditions before travelling.

In the wider destination of Sigmaringen, Sigmaringen Castle offers a different historical focus: it developed from a medieval castle into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Castle tours explore almost 1,000 years of the history of the House of Hohenzollern. The areas of focus therefore differ: in Hohentengen, the focus is on religious buildings and commemorative plaques; in Sigmaringen, it is on the history of the castle and the House of Hohenzollern.
