From a medieval residential tower surrounded by water to a Baroque building, and from shorter to longer hiking trails: Schliengen offers tangible ways to explore cultural and natural attractions. Its viticultural history dates back to 1147. Depending on whether you want to focus on architecture, landscapes or outdoor activities, your stay can take on a different emphasis.

Castles, Architectural History and Art

Entenstein Castle is Schliengen’s most historically significant village building. It developed from a medieval residential tower surrounded by water into its present form in the 16th century. The term “residential tower” refers to the building’s origins as a place of residence. Bürgeln Castle is also a Baroque landmark of the Markgräflerland: the present building dates from 1762 and is considered a symbol of the Markgräflerland. Together, they showcase different periods of architecture, from medieval origins to Baroque design.

BĂĽrgeln Castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Groups can arrange visits outside regular opening hours. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

In Liel, a district of Schliengen, the church has a Late Gothic choir that is considered an artistic highlight and served as a burial place for the Lords of Baden. Alongside castle architecture, this adds a religious site of art-historical significance that is also connected to the history of the Lords of Baden.

Hiking: Routes and Different Highlights

The BĂĽrgeln circular trail is 14 kilometres long and takes about 4.5 hours; it includes 320 metres of ascent and descent. The route passes through woodland and highlights BĂĽrgeln Castle and the medieval ruins of Sausenburg. Views extend towards the Eggenertal valley and Kandern. For planning your time, you can take the route length, approximate duration and elevation gain into account together.

The Eggenertal circular trail is approximately 12 kilometres long and is suitable for all-terrain strollers and mountain bikes. The Schliengen–Obereggenen trail is shorter, at 7.5 kilometres, and passes through Steinenkreuzle and a nature reserve. The options therefore differ in more than just length: the Eggenertal route also accommodates specific types of use, while the trail to Obereggenen is characterised by its route through the nature reserve.

Cycling and Viticulture

Schliengen’s cycling routes use developed cycle paths, paved farm tracks and smaller roads. When planning a cycling trip, the type of route is another factor to consider alongside your destination. You can take the different types of paths into account when deciding whether to focus more on hiking or cycling during your stay.

Schliengen’s viticultural history dates back to 1147. The municipality and its districts have a total of 250 hectares of vineyards. Viticulture offers another point of interest for visitors who want to learn about the history and character of the destination’s landscape, as well as its buildings and trails.
