Maulburg’s St. John’s Church brings together several clearly distinct periods: renovation work revealed foundations with an apse dating from the 12th century; the church was consecrated on 25 November 1753. There is also a painting from 1756 and bells with their own casting dates. Together with exhibitions on art and local history, these offer a cultural perspective focused on specific works, dates and mementos.

St. John’s Church: History and Art

The Protestant St. John’s Church is named after John the Baptist. Its consecration on 25 November 1753 should be distinguished from the older foundations: renovation work uncovered foundations, including an apse dating from the 12th century. The two dates therefore refer to different historical contexts—the 12th century relates to the archaeological find, while 1753 marks the consecration of St. John’s Church.

The church houses an oil painting of the Crucifixion by Baden painter Philipp Heinrich Kisling, dated 1756. The three bells can also be identified by their years: they were cast in 1830, 1921 and 1952. Architectural traces, painting and bells with different dates can thus be seen side by side.

A memorial stone is mounted above the side entrance. The coat of arms of St. John’s Church depicts a fisherman holding a salmon; the image reflects the fact that salmon once made their way as far as the Wiesental valley. Both details add to the view of the church: one is a feature on the building, the other a motif connected with the history of the Wiesental valley.

Exhibitions at the Intersection of Art and Local History

The “Under the Skin” exhibition showed coats by Astrid J. Eichin in May 2023. The “Maulburg Coat” was created for this exhibition with the participation of nearly 200 residents. The exhibit thus links a specific work with the involvement of many people from Maulburg.

The “Treasures from the Municipal Archives” exhibition offered a different perspective: it presented old plans and photographs connected with Maulburg’s past. While “Under the Skin” focused on coats and how they were made, the archive exhibition turned its attention to images and plans of the town. Those interested in the exhibitions can therefore distinguish between a crafted work and historical views and plans.

Bike Lockers and the Wiese River

Maulburg station offers a useful point of reference for planning a cycling trip: there are twelve bike lockers there, six of which have charging facilities. As station facilities and rental conditions may change, check the latest information in advance.

A planned ecological project is also connected with the Wiese River. Work was scheduled for 2026 as far as the confluence of the Wiese and Kleine Wiese rivers near Maulburg. The aim was to remove barriers and create aquatic habitats.

Additional Cultural Context: Lörrach

The wider destination of Lörrach has other cultural and landscape attractions specifically located there. Lörrach lies in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg, in the Markgräflerland region, directly on the Swiss border and close to the neighbouring city of Basel. The Dreiländermuseum Lörrach has a permanent exhibition covering around 1,000 square metres. The Burghof Lörrach’s cultural programme includes singing and music, dance, cabaret, literature and children’s theatre. Burghof Lörrach GmbH also organises the international STIMMEN Festival each year.

The wine trails are another distinct Lörrach theme: starting in Lörrach-Tüllingen, the Tüllinger Wine Trail connects the Riehen Wine Trail with the Weiler Wine Trail. The interconnected wine trails on Tüllinger Berg pass through around 90 hectares of vineyards, including the “Riehener Schlipfer”, “Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen”, “Weiler Schlipf”, “Haltinger Stiege” and “Ötlinger Sonnhole” sites. The trails offer views of the Wiesental and Rhine valleys and provide an insight into the work of winegrowers throughout the year.
