Fröhnd brings together landscapes, themed trails, winter activities and buildings with a long history. The municipality comprises nine districts: Hof, Ittenschwand, Kastel, Unterkastel, Ober- and Niederhepschingen, Künaberg, Stutz and Holz. The districts lie at elevations between 400 and 1,200 metres. The landscape is characterised by shady forests and sunny, open mountain slopes. Alongside individual sights, the area’s varied landscapes can also help guide your travel planning.
Hiking and experiencing the landscape
The Hirtenpfad and Urwaldpfad are themed trails in Fröhnd. If you would like to spend your stay exploring on foot, you can consider adding these two trails to your plans. The landscape provides a setting of forests and open mountain slopes, with both shady and sunny, open areas contributing to its character. The themed trails offer a different way to plan time outdoors from the designated cycling and winter sports options.
Cross-country ski trails and a lift in winter
The cross-country ski trails differ significantly in length and purpose. The Hörnerspur is a 25.9-kilometre high-altitude trail with an elevation difference of 818 metres. The Tannenbodenloipe, by contrast, is short and easy and intended for practising classic technique and skating. Both start at Tannenboden, between the districts of Hof and Ittenschwand. This lets you choose between a long high-altitude trail and a practice trail for your winter plans without changing your starting point.
Another winter option is the Hornlift in the district of Hof. It offers skiing and snowboarding, is 1,000 metres long and has an elevation difference of 300 metres. The cross-country ski trails and the lift therefore cater to different winter activities. If you are planning your visit for a specific date, check the latest information about the trails and lift in advance.
Cycling on roads and trails
Fröhnd has numerous mountain biking routes along wide forest roads and narrow trails. If you would prefer to ride an e-bike, you can choose a different type of route: a paved high-altitude road leads towards Pfaffenberg, after which you can cycle back towards the Upper Wiesental via the Wiesental cycle path. The distinction lies in the routes described and what they are suited to: mountain biking routes include wide forest roads and narrow trails, while the e-bike tour follows a paved high-altitude road.
Buildings, a chapel and farm life
The Kastler Bridge spans the Wiese in the district of Unterkastel. The arched bridge was built in 1908/09 and renovated in 1981. In Ittenschwand, a chapel built in 1767 houses a Rococo altar depicting Mater Dolorosa. The Klopfsäge in Fröhnd was built in 1808 and is a protected historic monument. Each date marks its own stage of construction or renovation: the chapel dates from 1767, the Klopfsäge from 1808, and the bridge’s history includes both its construction and its renovation in 1981.
The Leopoldhof offers another perspective on Fröhnd: guided farm tours are available, and the farm sells its own products directly to visitors. If you would like to include a farm visit or the chance to buy the farm’s own products in your travel plans, you will find two specific options here. Nature, history and a farm experience are different themes to enjoy during your stay.
