Schallbach lies at the entrance to the Kandertal Valley, on the southwestern foothills of the Black Forest and within the wider Basel–Weil–Lörrach area. The village is also part of the tri-national region between Germany, Switzerland and France. The landscape, village history and nearby destinations offer various starting points for planning a stay.

Landscape and Village Character

The Bamlach–Schallbach loess hill landscape is considered well suited to agriculture. Schallbach is a typical clustered village that developed around a farm and a chapel. Since no industry settled here, its rural village character has largely been preserved. The landscape and the village’s development therefore offer a different focus from the nearby excursion destinations.

Village History and Culture

The name Schallbach is first recorded in 1240 in a damaged document referring to St. Blasien Abbey. The earliest written mention of a chapel in Schallbach dates to 1275. The dates refer to different historical records: one for the village name and one for the chapel. They indicate written evidence, not founding dates.

The Schallbach Cultural Days were held between 2016 and 2025. If you would like to combine a visit with an event, check the current dates before travelling.

Holzeck on the Edge of the Forest

The Holzeck forest playground is located at the edge of the forest. It has a shelter, picnic tables and a barbecue grill. Play equipment includes a slide, a beam seesaw, a basket swing and a wooden balancing element. Check the current rules for the site before using the grill.

Groups of more than 25 people must register with the mayor’s office before using the forest playground. If you are planning a group visit, check the current municipal rules beforehand. This will help you organise your visit in line with the group size and applicable requirements.

Bus Route and Heritage Railway

Bus route 55 runs through Schallbach along the Kandern–Weil am Rhein–Basel corridor. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Kandertal Railway is a separate service: this heritage railway runs for 13 kilometres from Haltingen to Kandern through the Kandertal Valley. It is one of the few heritage railways in Germany and the only standard-gauge branch line in Baden-Württemberg operated exclusively as a heritage railway. Check the current operating dates before your trip.

Nearby Excursion Destinations

Nearby excursion destinations include Rötteln Castle ruins in Lörrach, Bürgeln Castle in Schliengen and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. The three destinations are quite distinct: castle ruins, a castle and a design museum. Together, they complement Schallbach’s rural village history with other historical and cultural themes.
