A baroque-style moated castle, Inzlingen’s oldest building and trails towards Bergkopf and the Ersteltal offer visitors tangible ways to explore the area’s culture and enjoy outdoor activities.

Moated Castle and Local History

Inzlingen Moated Castle acquired its baroque appearance between 1674 and 1745. The municipality acquired the building in 1969 and had it converted and renovated by 1977. This places the creation of its baroque form and the later work in clearly separate periods.

The Reichenstein Meierhaus provides an earlier point of reference: it was built in 1580 and is the oldest building in Inzlingen. Those interested in local history can place the Meierhaus in a period before the moated castle took on its baroque appearance. The moated castle is supported as a cultural meeting place for the region, hosting concerts, talks and exhibitions. If a particular concert, talk or exhibition is important to your trip, check the date in advance.

Hiking and Cycling

At the Inzlinger Kreuz forest car park, a hiking information board with details of various circular routes stands at the junction where the B 316 branches off towards Inzlingen/Grenzach-Wyhlen from the direction of Lörrach or Rheinfelden. One hiking route heads towards Bergkopf to Inzlingen Moated Castle, then continues through Inzlingen into the Ersteltal. The information offers different kinds of guidance: the board points to several circular routes, while a specific route to the Ersteltal is described. If you are planning a hike, it is worth checking the current condition of the trails.

There are no dedicated cycle paths in Inzlingen. Well-maintained routes that run largely away from roads lead, among other places, to the district town of Lörrach and the neighbouring Swiss municipality of Riehen. The cycling situation therefore differs from the hiking information: for cycling, the routes to named destinations are relevant, rather than specially designated cycle paths. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between following the circular-route information and using the cycling connections described here.

In the wider destination of Lörrach

Lörrach lies in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg, in the Markgräflerland, directly on the Swiss border and close to the neighbouring city of Basel. The Three Countries Museum has a permanent exhibition covering around 1,000 square metres. The Lörrach Sculpture Trail runs through the city and features 23 sculptures, fountains and monuments created by renowned sculptors. The cultural programme at Burghof Lörrach includes singing and music, dance, cabaret, literature and children’s theatre. Burghof Lörrach GmbH also organises the international STIMMEN Festival each year. Lörrach’s weekly market has been held since 1403.

The wine trails on Tüllinger Berg are another distinct landscape and cultural theme in Lörrach. From Lörrach-Tüllingen, the Tüllinger Wine Trail links the Riehen Wine Trail with the Weiler Wine Trail. The interconnected trails pass through around 90 hectares of vineyards, including the Riehener Schlipfer, Tüllinger Sonnenbrunnen, Weiler Schlipf, Haltinger Stiege and Ötlinger Sonnhole vineyard sites. Along the way, there are views of the Wiesental and Rhine valleys, while the trails also offer insights into winemakers’ work throughout the year.
