More than 80 kilometres of marked circular hiking trails lead through Wüstenrot. There are also nature paths, distinctive trees and museums, each with a different focus. The town lies in the heart of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, between the Lauter and Brettach valleys, at an altitude of just under 500 metres.

Hiking and Nature Paths

The hiking trail network comprises 13 marked circular routes, with hiking times ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The trails pass through shady forests and by fields, meadows and picturesque lakes. This makes it possible to plan a day’s hiking around the time available, without every route offering the same scenery.

One special route is the Dachsi Nature Experience Trail in Wüstenrot: the 2.6-kilometre circular trail passes through meadows and forest, and along the Dachsbach stream and Finsterrot Lake. Nature is the focus at its 11 stations. Around the lake, the trail offers opportunities to observe nature and discover butterflies, dragonflies, bees and the underwater world. You will need sure footing and sturdy footwear for this route. Some sections are narrow and unpaved, making the trail unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Nordic Walking and Cycling

Since June 2007, Wüstenrot has been a Nordic walking centre of the German Ski Association. Twelve routes wind through Wüstenrot’s woodland landscape; together, they cover around 80 kilometres and include elevation gains of up to 300 metres. Parking is available at every starting point. The routes are signposted throughout and equipped with heart-rate monitoring stations.

The 5-District Cycling Tour also starts and ends in Wüstenrot, connecting five districts. Its climbs and road conditions are important when assessing the route: three lengthy ascents make it challenging even for experienced cyclists. The tour mostly follows roads with little traffic, although busier roads must also be used in some places.

Woodland and Distinctive Trees

Wellingtonias over a hundred years old grow in the forests of Wüstenrot and neighbouring Löwenstein. At Wellingtonienplatz, these giant trees reach almost 45 metres in height and up to 165 centimetres in diameter, measured at a height of 1.5 metres. In the Löwenstein forestry district, they are among the tallest and thickest trees. Wüstenrot Circular Hiking Trail 3 starts at Wellingtonienplatz and leads through Wüstenrot, making the square both a convenient starting point for a hike and a place to see remarkable trees.

Museums and Nature Experiences

The Building Society Museum displays documents about Georg Kropp’s life and work and the founding of Wüstenrot Building Society. The Glass Museum features a collection of valuable glassware and other objects from the early glassmaking period. The two museums have different focuses: one explores Georg Kropp and the building society, while the other looks at early glassmaking.

The Nature Experience Camp invites residents of Wüstenrot and visitors from further afield to enjoy adventurous hours in the diverse natural surroundings of the town. The high ropes course in Wüstenrot is the first freestanding high ropes course in Baden-Württemberg; it can only be booked in advance.

Birds of prey flight displays are offered at the bird of prey centre on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 3 p.m., and on weekdays by arrangement. Check the current visitor conditions before your visit. The Silberstollen silver mine has a clear access restriction: it lies about 150 metres past the edge of Wüstenrot on the road towards Schmellenhof and is not accessible to visitors. Its passages, “Unverhofftes Glück” and “Soldatenglück,” are 127.6 and 34.85 metres long respectively; falling rubble and the need to protect wildlife rule out visits inside.
