Historic city walls, a lake on a former bleaching ground and wine experiences showcase different sides of Löwenstein. You can plan your stay around culture, scenery or an event date. Options range from architectural history and a lakeside circular walk to activities tied to a specific event or guided tour.

Walls, Museum and Castle Remains

Löwenstein’s medieval city wall dates from the 14th century. It includes the listed Freihaus, also from that period and now home to the Manfred Kyber Museum, as well as the exemplary renovated Old Press House (Alte Kelter), dating from the 15th century. The buildings thus represent two consecutive centuries: the Freihaus belongs to the period of the city wall, while the press house dates from the following century.

Since 1993, the museum has housed an archive containing Kyber’s estate. Remains of Löwenstein’s Old Castle can also be found behind the Evangelical Town Church in Löwenstein. Alongside the ensemble of city wall, Freihaus and press house, the castle remains offer another distinct historical point of interest. Anyone interested in the town’s architectural history will find several clearly distinct subjects here, rather than just one building taking centre stage.

Bleichsee Lake and Scenery

The man-made Bleichsee Lake lies on Löwenstein’s former bleaching ground, on a plateau in a woodland clearing in front of Sandberg. A circular path leads around the lake from the hiking car park, and benches invite you to linger in the landscape conservation area. Bleichsee Lake offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the lake and its scenic setting take centre stage, and the trail loops around the water.

Nearby, the Löwenstein viewpoint is located on the B 39 between Löwenstein and Hirrweiler. It offers a view into the valley. Its precise location is useful for orientation: the viewpoint lies between the two places mentioned and can therefore be considered a separate point of interest in the surrounding area.

A Sundial with Two Time References

The Globe Sundial in the grounds of Löwenstein Clinic is a work of craftsmanship and astronomy, and is considered a rarity in Germany. It shows the local time as well as the current time in other places around the world. This combination of local time and time readings for other parts of the world makes the sundial a special feature alongside Löwenstein’s historic buildings and scenic points of interest.

Experience Wine: Events and Guided Tours

At the “Wein über Berg und Tal” (“Wine Across Hill and Valley”) wine event, visitors walk through the Löwenstein vineyards from one station to the next in May, sampling wines alongside culinary specialities. The format combines a walk through the vineyards with tastings at several stations. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event date in advance.

The Löwenstein Music and Wine Festival takes place on the second weekend in August at Weinhaus Löwenstein. The programme includes traditional brass band music, hearty food and wine. Here, too, you should check the programme for the relevant year before your trip. The two events have different focuses: “Wein über Berg und Tal” centres on the vineyard stations, while the Music and Wine Festival brings together music, food and wine at Weinhaus.

Another option is to join a guided wine experience tour in Löwenstein. These tours share information about wine and include tastings. Options include group tours, public dates and tours on request; check with the providers for current dates. Unlike the wine festivals, these tours are not tied to the festival weekends mentioned above and are offered in a range of formats.

Guided Tours and Excursions

Castle and town tours, experience tours and Löwenstein mountain tours are offered in and around Löwenstein. The choice ranges from tours focused on the castle and town to experience-based formats and mountain hikes. If you would like to include a guided activity in your travel plans, you can choose one that matches your interests and check dates for your travel period.

This makes it easy to distinguish scheduled event dates from the destination’s other features described above.
