Around 245 hectares of vineyards give Erlenbach a strong focus on wine-growing. On the Kayberg, wine-growing is considered a defining feature of the twin municipality of Erlenbach–Binswangen. Its wine and dining scene includes many popular traditional wine taverns. Erlenbach’s wine culture is associated with Swabian specialties such as Maultaschen, Spätzle, Trollinger and Lemberger. This makes wine a way to explore the area’s landscape as well as its cuisine.

Wine-Growing and Walking Routes

Guided wine hikes are offered along picturesque paths through vineyard landscapes framed by rocks and forests. The Treue-Weiber-Tour runs from Erlenbach to Lake Breitenau; a small vineyard hut with panoramic views offers a place to pause along the way. This gives you a choice between a guided hike through vineyard country and a tour with a named destination at the lake. Check current trail conditions in advance; the situation at the vineyard hut may also change.

When looking for accommodation in Erlenbach, this mix of themes is a useful starting point: wine-growing, architectural history and guided hikes can be considered as different focuses for a stay.

Architectural History and Wine Museum

The Baroque Church of St. Martinus was built in 1753 and is a listed cultural monument. In its forecourt stands a war memorial consisting of an inscription plaque and four stone name plaques on a low plinth. The church and memorial represent different historical points of reference: the Baroque building and the commemorative monument with its plaques.

The bakery at Kirchgasse 22 was built in 1575 and is one of the municipality’s oldest buildings. The Wine Museum is housed in the former tithe barn of the Teutonic Order, built in 1574. Its exhibition includes wine presses from different periods, equipment used in wine-growing and bottling, a cooper’s workshop and draft harnesses. In contrast to the wine hikes, the focus here is on equipment and craftsmanship. Two different sides of wine-growing are thus presented side by side: the landscape along the trails and the objects associated with winemaking.

St. Wolfgang’s Chapel in Binswangen, built by the Teutonic Order in 1768, is also a listed cultural monument. Together, the churches, bakery and former tithe barn illustrate different building purposes and periods.
