The Heuchelberger Warte gives Leingarten’s hiking trails a distinctive historical connection: the Heuchelberger Wald adventure trail starts at the Mitte S-Bahn station, leads through the local recreation area to the Warte and connects there to a 2.7-kilometre circular route. There is also a museum featuring archaeological and local-history topics, as well as a wine experience tour through the vineyards. This lets you plan your stay around your interests in hiking, culture or wine.

Hiking to the Heuchelberger Warte

The Heuchelberger Wald adventure trail is 6.3 kilometres long. At the Heuchelberger Warte, it connects to a separate 2.7-kilometre circular route. The Warte is a popular destination offering panoramic views. On the final section of the adventure trail, hikers can also enjoy a panorama of the Heuchelberg’s vineyard slopes and the surrounding villages. Its 45 interactive stations are designed for children and adults.

The history of the Warte is also part of this route: Count Eberhard im Bart had it built in 1483. It was part of a 23.5-kilometre landwehr (defensive earthwork). The visit therefore combines views of the landscape with a tangible historic structure. If you would like to combine hiking and history, you can experience both along the adventure trail, while keeping the main route and the circular route’s distances distinct.

Museum and local history

The permanent exhibition at the “Altes Rathaus” Museum features archaeological exhibits and finds from the Großgartach culture. Timelines, dendrochronology diagrams and stratigraphy charts complement the exhibition. Other topics offer a glimpse into everyday life in earlier centuries, including the water supply and historical approaches to wastewater management. The museum also presents artefacts from local crafts dating back to the mid-19th century, as well as materials on emigration and immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Frankenschanze offers another way to explore history. The oval ring rampart is 84 metres long and 66 metres wide, and an information board explains the site. Together with the permanent exhibition, it offers a choice between archaeological finds, insights into earlier ways of life and a tangible historic site.

Wine Experience Tour and Wine Cuisine

The “In bio veritas” wine experience tour is an easy circular hike through the vineyards that takes about five hours. It runs mostly along paved paths, with gentle ascents and descents and, in places, vineyard steps. The starting point and finish are at Weingut Weinreuter in Leingarten. You can get there on the S4 S-Bahn to Leingarten West, followed by a signposted walking route; check the connection before setting off.

The culinary part of the tour includes five distinctive wines and a non-alcoholic option. A small soup, a selection from the Geifertshofen organic cheese dairy and fresh farmhouse bread are also offered. This sets the hike apart from the adventure trail: here, a roughly five-hour circuit and wine tasting provide the framework, while the adventure trail focuses on its stations and connection to the Heuchelberger Warte.

Since 2023, the five Leingarten winemakers and the town have jointly organised Weinkulinaria. This wine festival focuses on regional wines and matching culinary offerings. If you are planning to attend, check the latest dates in advance.
