Simmersfeld combines signposted trails with a distinctive local history. There are various options to choose from when planning your stay: hiking, cycling and snow-dependent winter sports, as well as the history of St. John’s Church and the landscape around the Schnaitbach.

Exploring on foot and by bike

Simmersfeld has 90 km of signposted hiking trails. As the extent of the trail network may change, check the latest trail information before setting out. The trails offer a way to spend the day exploring the surrounding area on foot; specific routes can be planned using the latest descriptions.

Two signposted cycling routes are also available: a family tour and a tour for sporty cyclists. The names indicate the different nature of the routes. Which one suits your plans depends on whether you are looking for a family-oriented or a more athletic tour. Route details may change, so check the latest information before setting off.

Cross-country ski trails and a toboggan run in winter

The municipality’s cross-country ski trail network covers a total of 39.5 km: 37.5 km of classic trails and 2.0 km of skating trails. These figures show how the total distance is divided between the two styles. There is also a 250 m-long toboggan run between Lift I and Lift II.

These activities depend on snow conditions. If winter is the main focus of your trip, check local conditions before travelling. This lets you plan around the actual snow conditions rather than assuming that the trails or toboggan run will be usable.

Church history and landscape

St. John’s Church was rebuilt on the same site between 1886 and 1889. The unusual chancel arrangement of the earlier building was retained. The church thus brings together its 19th-century construction phase and an architectural feature that belonged to its predecessor.

The course of the Schnaitbach can also be followed at a specific location: it forms where the Zugbach and Wolfsbach meet at the bend in the valley on the road from Simmersfeld to FĂĽnfbronn. The description identifies both tributary streams and the distinctive point where they converge.

The Schnaitbach Valley lies nearby, on the border between the districts of Calw and Freudenstadt. It is home to the remains of Schildeck Castle, the SchildmĂĽhle grain mill and six sawmills. The valley is therefore a distinct landscape and history highlight in the Simmersfeld area.

More highlights in the wider Calw destination

Other places broaden the range of things to explore in the wider Calw destination. In Nagold, a town in the district of Calw, the castle hill ruins of Hohennagold Castle still contain the foundations of various buildings from the castle’s inner ward, dating to the 12th century. There are also well-signposted trails and routes in and around Calw for exploring the Northern Black Forest Nature Park on foot.

In Schömberg, the barefoot park features a roughly 800 m-long trail with more than 20 different materials. As it operates seasonally, check opening times when planning your visit. The Haiterbach nature trail teaches children about trees and their leaves, as well as the geology of the quarry. At the animal long-jump activity, visitors can compare how far different animals can jump. These activities are in the wider Calw destination and are separate attractions, not features of Simmersfeld.
