The River Nagold flows right through the heart of Nagold and continues to shape the cityscape today. There are many green spaces along the river. Walking routes lead through the old town, along the river and up to the castle. In Nagold, urban paths, river scenery and history come together.
Walking Routes Between the Old Town, River and Castle
The walking routes differ in their destinations: they lead through the old town, along the Nagold or up to the castle. When planning your walk, you can choose whether to focus on the town center, the course of the river or the castle hill. The routes offer different ways to experience Nagold’s cityscape and landscape.
City History on the Castle Hill and by the River
The castle hill was already settled and fortified in Celtic times. The foundations of various buildings in the 12th-century core of Hohennagold Castle, now in ruins on Nagold’s castle hill, are still preserved today. This offers a historical perspective spanning from early settlement to the remains of the medieval castle core. Guided tours about the history of the castle and castle hill are offered regularly; check the latest dates before your trip.
Nagold’s industrial history is also connected to its rivers: clothmaking and tanning were the town’s most important industries for centuries, and the Nagold and Waldach rivers helped these trades flourish. The waterways therefore not only shape the cityscape today but also played an important role in the history of local work.
Cycling Through Nagold
The Nagold Valley Cycle Route runs from the source of the Nagold in the Black Forest to its confluence with the Enz near Pforzheim, passing right through Nagold. Its perspective therefore differs from that of the walking routes: while those lead to destinations within the town, the cycle route places Nagold along the connection between the river’s source and its mouth. Conditions along the route may vary; check them before setting out.
