An unusual chapter in the town’s history is told at the Corderie Plantive: in its workshop, three generations of rope-makers produced agricultural ropes between 1900 and 1996. The Corderie is an Écomusée whose subject is a specific craft and its long history of production. Anyone interested in the history of work and craftsmanship will find a distinctive way to discover Machecoul here.

Architectural history and surviving traces

The Église de la Trinité offers a different perspective on the past. The Neo-Gothic church was built from 1863 and completed in 1881. You can visit its exceptional stained-glass windows free of charge. A 13th-century sablière, a wooden wall beam, has also been preserved.

The Abbaye de la Chaume was founded in the 11th century and was the most important Benedictine establishment in Machecoul-Saint-Même. Admission is free; guided tours can be arranged on request through the Association de Sauvegarde de l’Abbaye de la Chaume. At the Château de Machecoul, by contrast, the focus is on destruction and surviving details: the castle was destroyed after the Revolution and the Vendée Wars. Defensive features and some Renaissance decorations can still be seen among the remains. The Château has been listed as a Monument historique since 1925.

These historic sites each offer a different focus: at the church, the construction period and stained-glass windows are noteworthy; at the abbey, its medieval foundation and Benedictine role; and at the Château, its history of destruction and surviving architectural features. The private Musée du Cirque de Machecoul adds another dimension to this cultural focus with its own collection, which includes circus models in various scales as well as posters, stage sets, costumes, programmes, postcards and other materials. The museum is closed in 2026; reopening is expected in spring 2027. If visiting the museum is important to your trip, take the expected date into account when planning.

Orienteering, marshland and canoe trips

At the Grand Étang, an orienteering course combines 26 checkpoints with a fun questionnaire about fauna, flora and history. The estimated duration is one hour and 30 minutes. This makes the time required for this activity more specific than for the half-day nature and canoeing offer from Fromagerie Beillevaire. The questions on these three topics give the course its own focus, while other activities turn your attention to the landscape and water.

From the roof of the Four Ă  Chaux, you can see the Marais breton; an orientation table is also set up there. The ForĂŞt de Machecoul is home to several rare birds of prey that breed in the Pays de la Loire, as well as rare or endangered insects, including beetles, dragonflies and butterflies. Machecoul therefore offers both a close-up view of the landscape and the wildlife and plant life of the surrounding area.

The guided “Canoë sympa” canoe trip starts in the heart of Machecoul. On the Falleron, the route leads from the town centre towards the quieter marshland; along the way are meadows, habitats for typical bird species and numerous canals. This offer is distinct from the canoe trip included in Fromagerie Beillevaire’s half-day nature activity.

Cheese and nature activities

Fromagerie Beillevaire in Machecoul offers tours of its production workshops. Depending on the option, these can be combined with a tasting or a cheese menu. The half-day nature and canoeing activity also includes a picnic featuring products from the Fromagerie. This gives you two different options: a visit focused on cheese-making, or an outing combining nature and canoeing with a picnic of the Fromagerie’s own products.

The suggested durations can help you plan your day: the orienteering course is estimated to take one hour and 30 minutes, while the Fromagerie’s nature and canoeing activity takes half a day. The guided “Canoë sympa” tour offers a different focus, with a trip on the Falleron from the town centre towards the marshland. Culture, craftsmanship, cheese and water activities thus offer different ways to discover Machecoul according to your interests.
