Montbert brings together the Ognon, bocage landscapes and routes of varying lengths. When choosing the town as a place to stay, two questions are especially practical: Which travel connections matter to you, and how much time would you like to set aside for local discoveries? There is a clear difference between a route of about an hour and a hike of around three hours. This lets you choose according to your own schedule rather than trying to fit several trails into one day.

Getting There and Choosing a Place to Stay

Nantes-Atlantique Airport and Nantes train station are about 30 minutes from Montbert; journey times may vary depending on traffic. The Nantes–Bordeaux motorway is approximately five kilometres from Montbert. These offer different points of reference for planning your journey: an approximate travel time to two facilities in Nantes and a distance to the motorway. Check the specific journey to suit your travel plans, as traffic can affect the quoted travel time.

If you are considering Montbert as a place to stay, you can weigh the journey against the activities available locally: are you most interested in connections to facilities in Nantes, trails through the countryside, or a short cultural walk? The routes differ not only in their surroundings but also in the time they take. This gives you a clear basis for planning your stay, without needing to fit every outing into a single day.

The Ognon, Bocage and Nature

The Ognon River flows through Montbert before emptying into Lac de Grand Lieu. The river’s natural environment has also been shaped by specific changes: following renaturation work on the Ognon in 2018, common frogs, grass snakes and dragonflies, as well as yellow water lilies, ash trees and alders, returned to the area. This described return therefore includes both animal and plant species. A form of quartz arenite specific to Montbert was also found along the Ognon, linking the river landscape to the area’s geology.

The Circuit « Passerelle » runs through the landscape around Montbert. Another perspective is offered by the Boucle vélo n°2, which passes along the Redour and Ognon rivers through bocage landscapes, agricultural areas and wetlands. The two descriptions emphasise different features: one focuses on the landscape around Montbert, while the other presents a cycling route that brings together rivers, farmland and wetlands.

Routes by Time and Landscape

The Circuit du Patrimoine in Montbert is 2.8 kilometres long and takes about an hour. The 2026 Grand-Lieu tourist guide describes it as a fun, easy route that is accessible to everyone. This makes it the shorter option compared with the Circuit La Foye, a hiking route planned at 12 kilometres and around three hours. The different distances and estimated times help you choose a route that suits the time you have available.

The Circuit La Foye crosses the Ognon, follows the river for several kilometres and passes through the village of Montbert as well as Geneston. Its landscape includes typical bocage sections, with wooded paths, working meadows and a pond. The route thus combines stretches alongside the river with several landscape types and the two named villages. By contrast, the Circuit du Patrimoine takes considerably less time; La Foye is the longer hiking option, with the described route and landscape features.

The Circuit de Chantemerle also has a distinct local connection: it loops around the centre of Montbert. On the Boucle vélo n°2, the church’s stained-glass windows dedicated to the soldiers of the First World War are among the sights. So when comparing routes, you can consider not only distance and time but also whether you would prefer to focus on landscapes, the town centre or a cultural point of interest.

Local History and Seasonal Attractions

The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-L’Assomption in Montbert is notable for the number of portraits depicted in its stained-glass windows. The windows are also a cultural point of interest along the Boucle vélo n°2 and are dedicated to the soldiers of the First World War. Local history also includes the Pas-Chalène workshop, discovered in 1878. Together, these subjects offer a look at different aspects of the town: church windows and their portraits, a historical dedication and an archaeological site, without implying a particular order for visiting them.

The Plan d’eau de Chantemerle has several newer play structures for children and received the “Parcours famille” label in 2018. The year records when it received the designation. Aqua 9 is an outdoor swimming pool open from May to October. If a visit to the pool fits into your travel plans, check the specific opening days in advance. This makes the seasonal opening period useful for planning, without guaranteeing that the pool will be open on any particular day.
