Palau-Del-Vidre combines a glassmaking tradition dating back to the 13th century with church art and Lake Sant MartĂ. You can focus your trip planning in different ways: explore glassmaking and local history, or set aside time for the two-kilometre trail around the lake and seasonal fishing.
Glassmaking Tradition and Craft
Workshops in the historic centre showcase various glassmaking techniques: fusing, enamelling, engraving, mosaics, murrine, pâte de verre and sandblasting. Glass is also blown using a glassblower’s pipe and a torch. This range of techniques makes glassmaking a common thread for exploring the village.
At Été Verrier, five to six glassmakers present their latest work each week in July and August. Local crafts also include L’Effet Verre, where handmade jewellery is created from Murano glass shaped using coloured glass rods worked with a torch.
Church Art and Historic Traces
The Church of Sainte Marie de l’Assomption contains two 15th-century Gothic altarpieces. Its furnishings also include a Renaissance altarpiece and the rare Vierge Ouvrante. Together, these works offer a tangible glimpse into the village’s religious art history.
Another historical trace is the former fort of Palau-Del-Vidre. It was once surrounded by moats and protected by an entrance gate. This former structure complements the story of church art with the history of a fortified building.
Two Walks, Two Ways to Explore
A guided walk through the streets and heritage of Palau-Del-Vidre introduces the history and traditions of glassmaking, as well as traces of the fire arts. The Baludik walk “Palau-del-Vidre, le palais du Verre,” by contrast, is a family-friendly treasure hunt through the village streets and to the glass workshops. The two formats offer different approaches: a guided introduction in one case, a route-based search in the other.
By the Lake and Outdoors
The two-kilometre path runs around Lake Sant MartĂ. Its shores feature varied vegetation and are designed for walkers and people taking part in sports. Fishing is possible depending on the season; day permits are issued on site by the local association.
Palau Aventures offers a treetop adventure course, zip lines and electric boat rides.
Cycling Routes and Trip Planning
The Boucle des Albères cycling loop leads to the lake at Palau-Del-Vidre and then to the village’s glass workshops. Another route connects the glassblowers’ village to the EV8 cycling route, passing through fields towards Argelès or Le Boulou and beyond.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Palau-Del-Vidre, first decide whether glass art and local history or the lake and outdoor activities will shape your stay. If you’re travelling in July or August, you can also check whether an Été Verrier event falls within your dates. The cycling routes are another planning option if you’d like to get around by bike.
