Caixas brings together Romanesque religious buildings, medieval alterations, dolmens and rock engravings. This gives trip planning a clear cultural focus: the Chapelle Saint-Marc offers an early highlight, while Saint-Jacques brings together a history of fortification and furnishings from later centuries. Other churches and chapels add their own building phases and historical associations. Dolmens and rock engravings extend the picture beyond architecture.

Comparing Chapels and Churches Through History

The Chapelle Saint-Marc is Romanesque and classified as a historic monument. Its single-nave building has a barrel vault; a stone engraved with an alpha and omega is set into the triumphal arch. The chapel dates from before the year 1000 and has a rectangular apse. Several specific features come together in this building: its early date, the shape of the nave and the distinctive stone in the triumphal arch.

A steep path leads from the road to the Chapelle Saint-Marc, situated on the wooded heights of Caixas. Take the incline into account when planning your visit; the condition of the path may change.

The church of Saint-Jacques is the parish church of Caixas and offers a different historical focus: it was fortified in the 14th and 15th centuries. The altarpiece dates from the 18th century and was restored in 1878. The church also houses a 17th-century Christ figure and a reliquary bust containing relics from the 17th and 18th centuries. Saint-Jacques thus offers a chance to view its history of fortification alongside several furnishings from distinct periods.

The church of Fontcouverte is also Romanesque; it is dedicated to Notre-Dame and was mentioned as early as 942. It houses a 17th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. Two medieval texts, from 942 and 1025, mention the place name “Petra Scripta” in Fontcouverte. The year 942 thus appears in two different contexts: the mention of the church and a place name in written texts.

The Chapelle Saint-Pons in the hamlet of Candell dates from the 13th century and is first mentioned in texts in 1268. Its nave has a preserved timber structure; other features include a broad apse added later, a round-arched stone portal and a bell gable. Sainte-Colombe de Las Illas acquired a second nave in the 14th or 15th century; the choir was also rebuilt.

The Chapelle Saint-Julien-du-Vilar is a badly deteriorated, roofless early Romanesque ruin. Its semicircular apse faces east, and traces of wall paintings have survived. The style seems to indicate that it dates from the 11th century; this is an estimate, not a definitive date.

Dolmens and Rock Engravings

Four dolmens are still visible in Caixas: Serrat d'en Jac, Col de la Llauze, Serrat de Cami Réal and La Ramera. Their visibility and condition may change; check both before planning a visit. Rock engravings can be found on numerous rocks and on schist. They are dated to approximately 2,000 years ago. While the churches and their furnishings are associated with specific centuries, the date given for the engravings is approximate.

Cheese and Event Dates

The Fromagerie de Caixas is another local point of interest: it operates organically and sells small farmhouse cheeses made from goat’s milk. These include plain and seasoned Cabécou des Aspres, Caixas, Cayroux, yogurt and tommes. Confirm arrangements with the business before visiting.

The municipal events program for 2026 listed Goigs del ous, the Midsummer festival, the Saint-Jacques village festival and a mass in Fontcouverte. Pétanque games were also scheduled for Fridays in August and September at 6 p.m. If a festival or game is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates again.
