In Canohès, the range of things to discover spans Romanesque architecture and historic waterworks, as well as theatre, film screenings and an annual sports day. The buildings tell of different periods and functions; the events have their own specific dates. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the two: the architectural history can be considered independently of the events calendar, while dates are essential for performances and festivals.

Romanesque church and distinctive buildings

The church of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte, also known as Sant-Quirc – Santa-Julite, is a Romanesque building dating from the 11th century and is listed as a historic monument. It offers a starting point for understanding the town’s historic architecture. The Mausoleum of Auguste Estrade has a very different form: this cylindrical structure, about ten metres high, is designed as a small Corinthian pseudo-monopteros temple. It was made from Roman ceramics and inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. The church and mausoleum therefore represent different architectural influences and building forms.

A third historic structure is the washhouse at the Correch dels Roumanis. The architect M. Fournols built it in 1894, and it is still functional today. Along with the church and mausoleum, it adds a building with a practical purpose to the town’s history. The three examples differ not only in when they were built, but also in their functions: a place of worship, a tomb and a washhouse.

Canal and historic waterworks

Water management also has a long history in Canohès. The Les Canals canal crosses the northern part of town and dates back to the 13th century. It is also a quiet place for walks. The Les Coves tunnel is a separate feature: it is a preserved underground water-diversion tunnel about 800 metres long. Together, the canal and tunnel point to two different forms of water engineering; the canal also offers an opportunity for a stroll.

Theatre and film screenings

The Théâtre du Réflexe combines an event venue with a theatre company. The venue has 100 seats and offers a year-round programme. The company tours with around ten productions aimed at both young audiences and the general public. This means there is both a specific venue and a theatre programme that goes beyond productions for a single target audience. Details of the annual programme may change; check the latest listings if you are planning to attend an event in Canohès.

Another recurring cultural initiative is CINECAN: free films are screened once a month. The screenings are open to residents of Canohès and the surrounding area, with no advance booking required. As programme details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning to attend a particular film night.

Sports day and digital tours

Every year, Canohès holds a sports day between late April and mid-May. The programme includes family and team competitions, introductory sessions and activities with local sports clubs. The mix may vary from year to year, and the exact dates change annually. If the sports day is important to your trip, be sure to check the date for that year’s event when planning.

Those who would like a digital overview first can take virtual tours of Canohès and its main monuments. These offer another way to get to know the town, complementing its buildings and events. You can then choose the focus of your stay based on whether you are more interested in architecture, the history of the waterworks, a walk along the canal, or a specific cultural or sporting event.
