Cultural history, winegrowing and outdoor activities give Sainte-Léocadie a range of different attractions. These include the Musée de Cerdagne, the Romanesque Église Sainte-Léocadie, the Clos Cal Mateu vineyard, a municipal walking route and ULM flights offered by Aéroclub Icaria. The area’s attractions therefore range from an ethnographic collection and historic architecture to wine production and air sports.
Cultural history at the Musée de Cerdagne
Since 1993, the Musée de Cerdagne has been housed in Ferme Cal Mateu, an 18th-century farm in Sainte-Léocadie. The two dates refer to different things: the farm dates from the 18th century, while the museum has been housed there since 1993.
The museum preserves an ethnographic collection that documents the agricultural, social and cultural history of a mountain region over the long term. Agriculture is not considered in isolation; it is part of the subject matter alongside social and cultural aspects. Visitors interested in regional history will find more here than an account of rural life.
The museum’s offerings include themed events, educational workshops, workshops for adults and children, conferences and temporary exhibitions. Check the current programme before your trip, as events and their availability may change.
Romanesque architecture and heritage status
The Église Sainte-Léocadie is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse and a later-built bell gable. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one nave; the apse and bell gable refer to other specific features of the building. The Romanesque plan and the later-built bell gable illustrate different architectural aspects of the church.
By decree dated 1 March 1960, the Église Sainte-Léocadie was listed as a historic monument. The date refers to the decree listing it; the architectural description, by contrast, concerns its form and individual features. This makes it possible to consider its legal heritage status and architectural design separately.
Clos Cal Mateu: Vineyard and wine
The Clos Cal Mateu vineyard is in Sainte-Léocadie, at an altitude of 1,300 metres. Since 1991, its harvest has been used to produce the Cerdagne wine “Cal Mateu”. This brings together a named vineyard, its altitude and the link between the harvest and wine production.
Wine production is a distinctive feature of the area, alongside the museum and church: the focus here is on winegrowing and a specific product made from the Clos Cal Mateu harvest. The availability of individual vintages may vary.
Walking route and ULM flights
The municipal walking route “La Cerdagne se raconte” begins at the entrance to the village, next to the Musée de Cerdagne. It is 3 kilometres long, marked in yellow and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. As route conditions and markings may change, check them locally.
Aéroclub Icaria is based in Sainte-Léocadie, next to an 800-metre grass runway belonging to the ALAT military mountain flying base, which is at an altitude of 4,300 feet. The club offers ULM flights and scenic flights over one of the most beautiful regions of France and Spain. Availability and flying conditions may change; check both before your trip.
