Palau-de-Cerdagne is a starting point for hikes towards the wooded landscape of Valcebollère and offers panoramic views of the Sierra del Cadi. It also features cross-border routes, annual August festivals and art-historical treasures. When planning, it is worth considering hikes separately by length, stated duration and difficulty: the longest route does not automatically have the longest stated walking time. This lets you tailor your stay to scenery, activity or heritage.

Border Landscapes and Trails

On the right bank of the Vanéra, farms and buildings in Palau-de-Cerdagne border Spain. Historic transhumance and smuggling routes also lead from Palau-de-Cerdagne into Spain. One detailed cross-border route description is the fourth stage of the GRP Tour de Cerdagne: it runs from Osséja through Palau-de-Cerdagne and across the border to the Spanish villages of Vilallobent and Age.

Hiking for Different Time Budgets

The PR 88 Jaca de Palau is a difficult hiking route covering 16.9 kilometres, with a stated duration of seven hours. Also rated difficult, the PR 24 Le Chemin des Contrebandiers covers 12.0 kilometres and has a stated duration of six hours. The fourth stage of the GRP Tour de Cerdagne is a moderately difficult, one-way stage covering 22.4 kilometres; its stated duration is five hours and 45 minutes.

The figures provide a useful comparison: the PR 24 is the shortest of the three routes, but is also rated difficult. The GRP stage is the longest, yet its stated duration of five hours and 45 minutes is shorter than the PR 24’s six hours. Length, stated time and difficulty therefore lead to different considerations when choosing a hike. Check route conditions before setting out; the current walking time for the PR 24 is not guaranteed.

Festivals, a Mill and Church Art

At the annual Bread Festival on 13 August, an oven dating from the 19th century is reopened. The granite millstones of the old mill turn each year during the festival. The mill dates from the 12th century and was renovated in the 16th century. Another August event is the Xicolatada, held every year on 16 August, when 15 master chocolatiers prepare 700 litres of chocolate. Check the current dates and event details before travelling.

Church art is another part of the local heritage. A church in Palau-de-Cerdagne on the PR 24 contains a baptismal font dating from the 13th century and a Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century. The Marian altarpiece in Notre Dame church consists of panels painted by Jaume Serra around 1370.

Horse-Riding Activities

Les Ecuries de la Vanéra offers riding lessons for children and adults, from beginner to advanced level. Pony rides are available from the age of three. The information outlines different ways to get started with horse riding: lessons are based on skill level, while pony rides are based on minimum age. Check availability before booking.
