The Casteil area lies in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between the main attractions: hiking and climbing, cultural heritage, the wildlife park or a festival date. The Cami Vell, the granite routes in the Cady Gorges, the paintings in the parish church and the chestnut festival offer different ways to explore the area. You can choose based on the themes you want to shape your trip.

Hiking and climbing

The Cami Vell del Coll de Jou Ă  Mariailles starts in Casteil and is classified as a difficult hiking trail. It is marked with white-and-red GR markers and yellow PR markers. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The Cady Gorges have multi-pitch granite climbing routes as well as single-pitch routes. From the car park, the climbing area can be reached on foot in about five minutes via the trail to the Cady waterfall. The two outdoor activities differ in focus: the Cami Vell is a difficult hike, while the gorges offer granite climbing in different route formats.

The options also differ in access for day planning: the Cami Vell is a difficult hike; from the car park, you can reach the climbing area in about a five-minute walk via the trail to the Cady waterfall.

Montagne Vibration offers summit ascents and mountain traverses. Check availability before booking.

Cultural heritage: Abbey and parish church

Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey was listed as a historic monument in 1889. The monastery sits on a mountainside and overlooks the valley.

The vaults of the nave and side chapel of Saint-Martin parish church are decorated with contemporary paintings depicting the legend of Guifred II of Cerdanya. The columns and capitals of the bell tower come from Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey. The parish church thus brings together a subject depicted in the paintings and a specific architectural element originating from the abbey.

Wildlife park and chestnut festival

Casteil’s wildlife park is home to more than 300 animals from five continents. It adds a distinctive wildlife attraction to the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

Casteil’s chestnut festival takes place on the second Sunday in October. It is considered a major annual event and attracts many people. Check the exact festival dates before travelling. The wildlife park and the festival offer different reasons to visit: the wildlife here, and an annual October event there.

The Mariailles refuge is a starting point for some hikes to Canigou. It offers sleeping space for 53 hikers in dormitories with blankets; reservations are required. Capacity and services can change, so check the conditions when planning your trip.
