Salt marshes, orchards and vegetable fields shape the landscape of the Salanque. In Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, these regional features meet a varied range of options for those interested in culture, markets and cycling. A look at market days, church architecture and routes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Market and regional products
The Marché de détail takes place on Thursdays and Sundays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Products on offer include local fruit and vegetables, cheese, fresh meat, cured meats, fish and spices, as well as handcrafted goods. So the market showcases local crafts as well as food. The selection at individual stalls may vary; check the market hours again before your visit. The combination of regional produce and a landscape shaped by orchards and vegetable farming makes the market a good starting point for getting to know the local character of the town.
Church, history and maritime heritage
The Église Notre Dame du Rosaire was first mentioned in 981 under the name San Llorenç de la Salanca; it gave the town its name. In 1723, it was rebuilt in the Southern Gothic style as the Chapelle de Notre Dame du Rosaire. The organ offers another way to explore the heritage: the church has a Puget organ with an 8-foot romantic specification. Its instrumental section is listed as a historic monument. The church’s architecture, the history of its name and its organ offer culture enthusiasts different aspects to look out for when learning about the town.
Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque’s maritime heritage includes a maritime tradition, a salt culture and fishing resources. This tradition is linked to the town’s proximity to the Étang de Salses-Leucate and the Mediterranean coast. Together with the salt marshes and agricultural land, this reveals a landscape whose local character is shaped by both water and cultivation.
Cycling routes and pump track
Two different options are described for cyclists: Circuit n°1 by Perpignan Méditerranée covers 26 kilometres from Le Barcarès to Saint-Hippolyte and passes through Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque. The local cycling network is also linked to routes beyond the town, including the Voie verte de l’Agly.
Another cycling option is the public pump track. It was inaugurated and opened to the public in April 2022. The Fédération Française de Cyclisme and the Union Cycliste Internationale selected Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque to host an international-level sporting event at the pump track. This also gives the facility particular sporting significance. Check the latest conditions before using it.
Cultural activities and events
The Médiathèque offers cultural activities for all generations throughout the year. These include storytelling sessions, creative workshops, activities for toddlers, literary events, conferences, film screenings, video games and digital events. Individual activities may vary. The programme ranges from literature and events to film and digital topics; if you are interested in a particular activity, you can check its date in advance.
The Fête de la Sant-Joan takes place every year at the summer solstice in the Jardin d’enfants « La Motte de l’Agly ». If you would like to include this event in your stay, check the latest event dates. For water sports, KiteSchool-Leucate offers kitesurfing, wing foiling, e-foiling and stand-up paddleboarding in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque. The range of options therefore spans regional food and heritage, cycling, cultural events and water sports.
