Castelnou combines medieval architecture with a hiking route through the surrounding countryside. The Château de Castelnou towers above the village; the route to Roc de Majorque starts in the village. Around Castelnou, hills, olive groves, vineyards and garrigue shape the landscape. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the château, fortified walls and church, or include the hike in your itinerary.
Château and Fortified Village
The medieval Château de Castelnou was built at the end of the 10th century. It was once the military and administrative capital of the Viscounty of Vallespir. The château is open to visitors year-round; check opening hours and prices in advance. This makes it possible to plan your visit, while distinguishing the castle’s historical role from its present-day function.
The fortified village preserves defensive walls with eight towers and four gates. While the château represents the area’s former military and administrative role, the walls make the village’s fortifications tangible. These two features give the local history different points of focus: the château’s former significance and the physical form of the fortifications.
Church and Crafts
The Church of Sainte-Marie-del-Mercadal is also part of Castelnou’s cultural heritage: it is listed as a historic monument. Inside is a painting of an unclothed Christ by Camille Descossy. Santa Maria del Mercadal dates from the 12th century. The artwork, protected status and date of construction add specific religious landmarks to the history of the castle.
Artisans offer another glimpse of cultural life: they include potters, jewelers and other craftspeople who sell their creations in small, picturesque workshops. Historic buildings and craftwork thus offer different interests to explore during a stay. Individual workshops may change. If you would like to visit the studios, check in advance which ones are currently open.
Hike to Roc de Majorque
The Roc de Majorque depuis Castelnou route starts in Castelnou, is 5.5 kilometers long and is rated moderate. The hike is listed as taking about two hours. Its distance, difficulty rating and approximate duration provide a practical basis for deciding whether to include it as a separate activity. Route information may be revised and trail conditions can change, so check the latest details before setting out.
The route leads to a 360° panorama over the Corbières, the Roussillon plain and the Pyrenees and their foothills. There is also an orientation table at the viewpoint. Along with views across several types of landscape, the hike offers a specific point of reference for finding your bearings. This makes it different from a visit focused mainly on the village’s buildings and history.
Getting There and Accommodation
If you arrive by car, park in the car parks below Castelnou: the village center is accessible only on foot. As access rules may change seasonally, it is advisable to check the latest notices before your visit.
