Porta combines hiking trails through the Carol Valley with places of historical and cultural interest. Planning therefore involves two different questions: Should the focus be on a valley route, a challenging circular hike, or a connection to long-distance trails? And which buildings give your stay a historical focus? The PR No. 4 and the Randonnée des Trois Nations offer different hiking experiences; the Château de Carol and the Église Saint-Martial de Courbassil add a glimpse into the history of the area.
Hiking in the Carol and Campcardos Valleys
The PR No. 4 crosses the Carol Valley from Porté-Puymorens to Latour-de-Carol, passing through Porta. The return journey on this route can be made by train. If you plan to do this, check current train services before your trip. From the PR No. 4, you can also reach the long-distance trails GR 7 and GR 107 via the climb through the Campcardos Valley and the crossing of the Ribera de Campcardos.
The Randonnée des Trois Nations is a challenging 12.5-kilometre circular hike starting from Porta. It can be extended to the Porteilla Blanca d’Andorra, which lies at the tripoint of France, Andorra, and Spain. Different planning considerations apply to each route: for the PR No. 4, these include the valley route, the possibility of returning by train, and connections to the GR 7 and GR 107; for the circular hike, the key factors are the difficulty, distance, and optional extension to the tripoint.
Scenery in the Campcardos Valley
The Vallée du Campcardos in Porta takes its name from Campo Cardos, a former summer pasture dating from the 13th century. The valley has rich botanical diversity along the trail; its shaded slope is home to the largest and highest-altitude birch forest in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The valley’s name adds a historical connection to these impressions, recalling the area’s former use. Porta is one of 15 municipalities in an area designated as a Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive and as a Special Protection Area under the Birds Directive. The regional conservation framework is therefore also relevant to understanding the landscape in Porta.
Buildings and local history
The Château de Carol is one of the castles and defensive structures in Porta. The surviving remains of the Château féodal de Carol include two square towers with elevated crenellations and loopholes. The castle is historically linked to the former need for comital and later royal authority, as well as the protection of the population that sought refuge in the Carol Valley.
The Église Saint-Martial de Courbassil dates from the 12th century. In 1129, it was initially dedicated to Sant Quinti de Cortvassil.
