Maureillas-Las-Illas brings together the themes of cork, pre-Romanesque churches, art and routes through the landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose from different focuses: local crafts and nature, sacred art, or activities on foot and by bike. The specific places and offerings can help you match the destination to your interests.

Cork as a Craft and a Landscape Theme

The Musée du Liège was founded in 1982 by former cork workers to pass on local expertise. It traces the journey from cork oak to cork stopper and showcases the many uses of cork. The subject thus extends from the raw material to its various applications. The cork oak forests of Maureillas are also part of the story: they are home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. The Sentier du liège leads through these forests, where traces of cork harvesting can be observed. The museum and trail explore the subject in different ways—through the history and uses of the material on the one hand, and through the landscape and visible traces of its harvesting on the other.

Pre-Romanesque Churches and Artworks

The Église Saint-Michel-de-Riunoguès is an exceptionally well-preserved pre-Romanesque church, characteristic of buildings from the 9th and 10th centuries. Its roof, covered with slate slabs, is considered rare both in Vallespir and in Roussillon. Inside is a carved altarpiece dating from 1739, depicting Saint Michael battling the devil. The Chapelle Saint Martin de Fenollar is also pre-Romanesque; its important frescoes were created in the first half of the 12th century. The church of Saint Étienne preserves altarpieces, statues, a pulpit and other furnishings dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Together, these examples offer specific points of reference for exploring different periods of construction and forms of church art.

Thursday Market Visit

The weekly market in Maureillas-Las-Illas is held every Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Place de la République. It offers fruit and vegetables as well as aromatic and medicinal plants. Meat and charcuterie are available every other Thursday. The market therefore makes a clearly defined addition to your weekly itinerary, while the range of goods varies by market day. Check the current market times and vendors’ offerings before your visit.

Hiking and Cycling

A 10.5-kilometre hike to the Dolmen de la Siureda, described as easy, starts in Maureillas-Las-Illas. The dolmen stands in a particularly sunny spot with lovely views over the Roussillon plain. The hike also leads to the Tour de Bel Ĺ’il, which also offers panoramic views over the plain. The route length and viewpoints provide clear reference points for the hike; check trail conditions before setting out.

Two different cycling routes pass through Maureillas-Las-Illas. La Méditerranée à Vélo runs through the commune. Pirinexus is a cross-border cycle tourism route that forms a loop and also passes through Maureillas-Las-Illas. Bus route 530 connects Arles-sur-Tech, Maureillas and Perpignan.
