Corneilla-La-Rivière can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of the Church of Saint-Martin and the landscape around Força Real. This can help you decide whether to focus your trip more on cultural history or on the views and hiking trail. These themes can give your stay a focus without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.

The long history of Saint-Martin

The Church of Saint-Martin is documented as early as 951. In 1145, Bishop Ugaldar of Elne consecrated the church. These dates mark different milestones: 951 is the earliest record, while 1145 is the date of its consecration. In 1640, Saint-Martin was looted and set on fire by the retreating Spanish army under Jean de Garai. The church was rebuilt the following year. Its history therefore encompasses an early record, later upheavals and its reconstruction.

The church also houses the 18th-century polychrome wooden sculpture Misteri de Nostra Senyora dels Dolors. “Polychrome” refers to the work’s use of multiple colours. It was registered on 30 April 1980 under reference ISMH PM66001506. The registration date should be distinguished from its 18th-century creation: it adds another, much later date to the sculpture’s history.

Medieval Corneilla-La-Rivière was also defined by thick defensive walls with four towers. Two of these towers still remain today. The figures distinguish the original fortifications from what survives: the complex had four towers, two of which still stand. This adds another perspective on the village’s medieval past to the history of the church.

Força Real: views and hiking trail

Corneilla-La-Rivière is a convenient base for access to Força Real. At 507 metres, it is the highest point on the Roussillon plain. From Força Real, you can enjoy 360-degree views across the Aspres, the Conflent and the Corbières, as far as the Côte Vermeille. The elevation and panorama describe different aspects: the elevation locates the point in the landscape, while the view takes in several named areas.

The Boucle de Força Real is also relevant when planning your trip: Corneilla-La-Rivière is one of two possible starting points for the loop. The Boucle is part of the Balcon Nord du Canigó eco-hiking trail. The village is therefore described both as a base for accessing Força Real and as a possible starting point for this named route. The route and the viewpoint offer separate reference points for planning: the Boucle is part of the hiking trail, while the panorama refers to Força Real.

The sunny, windy slopes of Força Real are also considered terroir for distinctive wines. This adds a wine perspective to the landscape: in the topics described here, Força Real represents not only elevation and far-reaching views, but also its recognition as wine-growing terroir.
