Banyuls-sur-Mer brings together a wine-growing landscape, hiking trails, seaside nature experiences and culture connected with the sculptor Aristide Maillol. When planning your trip, you can organize these themes around your own interests: would you rather explore trails through the landscape, the underwater trail and aquarium, or museums, chapels and wine tastings? The activities offer different highlights, but there is no need to follow a fixed daily itinerary.

Hiking trails and landscape

Banyuls-sur-Mer is the starting or finishing point of the GR 10, a long-distance hiking trail that crosses the Pyrenees and links the Mediterranean with the Atlantic. Other marked trails wind through terraced vineyards, secluded coves and the mountain landscapes of the Albères. The trails therefore differ in scale: the GR 10 crosses the Pyrenees, while the other routes described here explore the landscapes around Banyuls. No specific walking time or difficulty level is given.

The vineyards are characterized by terraces supported by more than 6,000 kilometers of schist walls that descend to the Mediterranean. The Jardin Méditerranéen above Banyuls-sur-Mer offers a different perspective on Mediterranean plants: this three-hectare park is home to more than 300 plant species from regions with a Mediterranean climate. Peyreffite, meanwhile, is a pebble beach shared by Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerbère. Set between steep schist hills, it offers a distinct landscape of its own.

Underwater trail and aquarium

The underwater trail starts at Peyrefite Beach in a sheltered bay. It is 250 meters long and has five observation stations representing different ecosystems. Visitors explore the trail at the surface with a mask, snorkel and fins. As it operates seasonally and arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting.

The Aquarium de Banyuls is by the sea, a few dozen meters from the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve. Since 2017, it has been part of the Biodiversarium, which is connected to a botanical garden. From Banyuls-sur-Mer railway station, the aquarium is about a 15-minute walk. TER trains connect the station with the nearest towns every day; bus route 540 also runs between Perpignan and Cerbère. Check current timetables before traveling.

Maillol, the chapel and local history

The Musée Maillol displays numerous works by the sculptor, including bronzes, terracottas, paintings and lithographs. The presentation also gives a sense of Maillol’s everyday life at the former Métairie, where he liked to work and relax. The site thus connects the works of art with the artist’s former living and working environment.

Another historical highlight is the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette. Bonaventure Reig built it in 1863 after a pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de la Salette in the Isère département. A small path provides access on foot or by car; from the chapel, the view takes in Banyuls, its wine-growing area and the entire Côte Vermeille. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the conditions before visiting.

The “Dans les pas d’Aristide” walking route passes through the typical lanes of Cap d’Osna, a former fishing quarter where Maillol lived. The parish church of Saint Jean Baptiste is part of the town’s more recent architectural history: it was built in 1969 to replace another relatively new church that had been destroyed in the 1950s. Together, these places offer different ways to explore Maillol’s life and the history of Banyuls.

Wine, tastings and craftsmanship

The wine and production experiences vary in focus. At Cave Terres des Templiers, the visit includes a film, guided tours of the indoor and outdoor aging cellars, and a guided tasting of three AOP wines. The program and access arrangements may change, so check the latest visitor information.

The winemakers’ aperitifs combine a cellar visit led by the producer with a tasting. They are scheduled for 6 p.m. on dates from April 13 to October 26; booking is required by the day before at the latest. At Vinaigrerie La Guinelle, Chandra explains how Banyuls vinegar is made. The range of experiences therefore extends from wine tastings to the artisanal production of vinegar, while the terraces and schist walls shape the wine-growing landscape.
