Vernet-les-Bains combines hiking opportunities with natural and thermal history. For your planning, there are very different hiking formats side by side: an 11-kilometre circular route and an eight-day circular trail rated as very difficult. The arboretum, museum collections and historic buildings complement this view of the town. Which of these aspects you emphasise more depends on whether your trip is shaped more by hiking, details of nature or the town’s history.
Hiking: two different scales
CrĂŞtes et Balcons is an 11-kilometre circular route starting in Vernet-les-Bains. Paths and wide tracks lead through the forests of the Conflent, where Corsican pines, beeches and chestnut trees grow.
The Ronde du Canigó GR®P sets a different time and distance frame: it is an eight-day circular hike rated as very difficult, covering 157.1 kilometres. It begins and ends at the tourist office in Vernet-les-Bains and is part of the 1,000-kilometre network of GR® and GR®P hiking trails in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. Compared with the 11-kilometre loop, it is a significantly longer hiking project. Since route information and difficulty ratings can be updated, check the local arrangements and current route details before you start.
Village Arboretum and collections
Vernet-les-Bains is France’s first Village Arboretum. More than 2,000 trees from 320 different species are recorded there. They are not concentrated in a single park, but are spread across private gardens and public parks.
The Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Vernet-les-Bains also offers two clearly distinct collection areas. It displays more than 7,400 fossilised animal fossils, including numerous ammonites and trilobites. In addition, there are more than 2,500 minerals from over forty French départements. Fossils and minerals each give the collections a distinct focus and make natural history another topic alongside the hiking trails and the arboretum.
Thermal history and local history
The Casino de Vernet-les-Bains was built between 1880 and 1884 and is one of the few surviving testimonies to the thermal complex from the late 19th century. By decree of 21 March 2017, it was listed as a historic monument. The Hôtel du Portugal also recalls the former heyday of thermalism in Vernet-les-Bains: it is one of the few surviving testimonies from this era. A thermal water spring beneath its ground floor now supplies the Lavoir de Vernet-les-Bains on Rue des Lavandières.
Les Thermes de Vernet-les-Bains offer thermal treatments in the specialist fields of rheumatology and respiratory or ear-nose-throat conditions. Thus, both the current focus of treatments and the architectural testimonies of the former thermal heyday are among the themes that characterise the town.
Other stops reveal additional historical contexts. The Monument de l'Entente Cordiale commemorates the 1904 diplomatic agreement signed by France and Great Britain. The Église Saint-Saturnin was a former castle chapel and, after a flood in the 18th century, became the parish church. In this way, the historical references range from thermal architecture and the town church to European diplomacy.
