Montazels can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the Fontaine monumentale with its striking basin design, the history of hat-making at MontCapel, and the games-related offering at Lud’Aude. The Church of Sainte-Cécile and the mention of “Castrum de Montazels” add further context. Depending on your interests, you can focus your trip on architectural history, crafts, local history or games.
The fountain: construction period and basin design
The Fontaine monumentale was listed as a historic monument by decree on 12 February 1951. Three local craftsmen built it between 1751 and 1784; the main construction phase took place in 1780. Its large circular basin is divided into three sections by stone arms radiating from a central pyramid. The pyramid thus forms the focal point of the design, while the arms divide the basin. The construction period and basin design offer two distinct ways of looking at the fountain: the dates place its creation in context, while the architectural description draws attention to the structure itself. The 1951 decree belongs to a later period than the construction.
Local history across different periods
The Church of Sainte-Cécile dates from the 17th century. Records from 1352 mention the expression “Castrum de Montazels”. This mention predates the later building histories of the church and the Fontaine by several centuries, adding an older written reference to Montazels to the architectural context. Different dates therefore stand side by side: a 14th-century mention, the 17th-century church, and the fountain’s construction, with its main phase in the 18th century.
MontCapel: hat-making and its history
MontCapel is the last hat factory in France to make its own wool felt. When a tour is available, you can learn about some of the steps involved in hat-making at the Chapellerie MontCapel, including carding, fulling and degaging. The technical terms draw attention to the manufacturing process itself: the focus is not only on the finished hat, but also on the individual steps involved in making it. The Chapellerie’s history also includes a somber chapter: during the Retirada in 1939, it served as an internment camp. Craftsmanship and historical remembrance offer two very different ways to explore the site.
For 2026, guided tours were scheduled for 2 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month. If you plan to take a tour, check before travelling whether a date is currently being offered.
