The Vieux Pont over the Sou connects village history with hiking plans in Labastide-En-Val: this historic structure is both the starting and finishing point of the Chemin des Panoramas. A micromuseum and the washhouse further link the village setting with the surrounding landscape. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can therefore consider the village from two different perspectives: its history and a named hike with sweeping views.

The Vieux Pont and its history

The Vieux Pont was listed as a historic monument by decree on 27 September 1948. This date refers to its listing, not its construction: the year the bridge was built is unknown. A survey of bridges had already listed it as “old” in 1777. Historically, it was, together with another bridge, the only link between the village and the church. This brings together two time periods: an early construction history that cannot be dated precisely, and a clearly documented role in the relationship between the village and the church at the time. Its 1948 monument status is another milestone in this history. For visitors, the bridge therefore offers more than a single date; its connection to the church also explains its role in the village at the time.

Hiking on the Chemin des Panoramas

The Chemin des Panoramas is an easy 10 km hike with 450 metres of elevation gain. It begins and ends at the Vieux Pont, so a historic village landmark marks both the start and the finish of the route. Along paths through garrigue and woodland, the hike offers impressive views of the Southern Corbières, the Pyrenees, the Crêtes de Val-de-Dagne and the Montagne Noire. An orientation table helps you locate and make sense of the panoramas. The distance and elevation gain provide practical information for planning your day; its easy rating is also part of the route profile. As trail conditions can vary, check them before setting out.

Micromuseum and washhouse

A former public toilet pavilion in Labastide-En-Val has been converted into a micromuseum. A 2021 report described the micromuseum as containing twelve enlarged postcards depicting the village’s past, as well as an 1807 cadastral map. The postcards and map offer different perspectives: the cards explicitly relate to the village’s past, while the map, through its date, provides a specific historical reference. A 2019 description stated that the washhouse in Labastide-En-Val had been fully renovated. Alongside the Vieux Pont, these provide further local points of reference for the village’s history.

Plan your stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Labastide-En-Val, you can choose according to what you plan to focus on during your stay. The Chemin des Panoramas brings the landscape together in a named route, while the village’s historical landmarks are spread across several locations. Since the hike begins and ends at the Vieux Pont, it also provides a specific point of connection between the route and the village’s history. This can help you decide whether hiking, historical landmarks or a combination of the two will shape your stay.
