In Lapalme, things to discover range from the lagoon and coastal landscape to the salt marshes, a historic town gate and a chapel. Depending on whether you are interested in nature, water sports, salt production or local history, you can tailor your stay accordingly.
Nature and water sports
The Étang de La Palme lies at the heart of a Natura 2000 site and is a sensitive natural area recognized for its biodiversity. It is also home to one of the last natural grey dunes on the French Mediterranean coast. This makes the lagoon interesting not only for its scenery but also as a distinctive natural environment.
Winds and shallow water make the Étang de La Palme a suitable place for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Local conditions and zones may vary, so check the conditions in effect before setting out. A tourism listing updated in February 2025 listed EBKITE in La Palme, offering introductions and kitesurfing lessons. Booking and operating conditions may change; check them in advance.
You can go hiking at Cap Romarin. Garrigue and dry grasslands, together with numerous dry-stone walls, shape habitats where exceptional flora and fauna can be found. This lets you choose between water-based activities and a hike through a varied landscape.
Salt production and trails in the salt marshes
The Salin de La Palme is one of the most important salt-producing areas in the Aude département and covers more than 400 hectares. Visitors can explore the site by electric mini-train or electric scooter and learn about salt production along the way. Both options offer a hands-on introduction to salt, so your visit need not focus on the landscape alone. As schedules may change, it is advisable to check the latest times in advance.
The salt marshes are also home to the signposted “Des Salines au Rouet” trail. The 4-kilometre route runs from the car park at the Salin de La Palme to a railway crossing. Check the signage and access conditions on site, as trail conditions may change. The Boutique du Saunier at the Salin de La Palme sells fleur de sel, seasoned salts, wine and regional products; availability of individual products may change.
Beach and landscape
Plage du Rouet de La Palme is a natural fine-sand beach stretching 2.5 kilometres. The beach is monitored seasonally. Unlike the lagoon, which is suited to kitesurfing and windsurfing, the long sandy beach is a destination in its own right. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are mainly looking for water sports, a hike or time on the coast.
Town gate and chapel
Porte de la Barbacane is a 16th-century town gate and is listed as a historic monument. It forms the main entrance to the fortifications of the village of La Palme. It is a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in the village’s history and architecture.
Chapelle Saint Pancrace stands among vineyards and garrigue, near the village of La Palme and the ancient Via Domitia. Together, the chapel and the town gate offer different cultural points of reference: the chapel’s setting among vineyards and garrigue, and the village fortifications. These sites complement the nature and salt-related attractions with a glimpse into La Palme’s cultural history.
