Puichéric between the Canal du Midi and the Aude

The Canal du Midi runs through Puichéric; on the Aude, there is a base for canoeing and kayaking, as well as other activities in nature. This brings two distinct connections with water into focus: the canal, with its structures, and the river, with opportunities for active exploration. Also nearby are Notre-Dame Church, the Château de Puichéric and a cycling option between Puichéric and Caunes-Minervois. If you are considering a stay in Puichéric, you can choose among these options according to your interests: canal structures, heritage, water sports or a route between two towns.

Locks, bridge and sculptures

The Écluse de l’Aiguille is a double lock on the Canal du Midi, located in Puichéric. Wooden sculptures and sculptures made from recycled materials at the aqueduct or lock welcome travelers to the Canal du Midi. At this stretch of the canal, engineering structures meet artistic design.

Another landmark is the stone bridge between Puichéric’s two locks. It is the point on the canal closest to the village. The double lock and the bridge offer different ways to discover Puichéric’s canal infrastructure: one marks a specific lock, while the other is the canal point nearest to the village.

Canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding

On the banks of the Aude, Puichéric has a base for canoeing and kayaking, as well as other outdoor activities. The Eaurizon water sports center in Puichéric offers canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. For canoe and kayak trips on the Aude, you can choose between going independently and taking a trip with state-certified guides.

The options therefore differ both in activity and in the kind of guidance provided. Stand-up paddleboarding complements the canoeing and kayaking options mentioned; for trips on the Aude, you can also choose between going independently and taking a guided trip. This makes it possible to plan a specific focus on water sports without combining the different options into a single program.

Notre-Dame: art and visits by appointment

Notre-Dame Church is listed in France’s supplementary register of historic monuments. The choir wall paintings are also classified as protected cultural property. The frescoes at the end of the choir depict scenes from the Passion of Christ and the life of Mary. Another artistic detail is the 17th-century altar table made of Caunes marble.

There is one clear requirement for visiting: the church can be visited by prior appointment. If you would like to include the church in your stay, you should therefore arrange an appointment in advance. The frescoes and altar table provide specific points of interest: the religious scenes depicted, and the material and age of the altar table.

Château de Puichéric: a tower and features from different centuries

The Château de Puichéric was listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree dated 8 November 2013. Its features include a 13th-century tower and 17th-century frescoes and painted ceilings. The dates distinguish the history of the tower from the later decorative features. The château therefore offers a different historical perspective from Notre-Dame Church: here, the focus is on the tower and interior decoration from different centuries.

The Chemin Vert as a cycling option

Another option is the Chemin Vert between Puichéric and Caunes-Minervois. The route can also be traveled by bicycle. This complements activities on the Aude with an option along a route between two named towns. It offers a separate focus for trip planning: canoe and kayak trips are the main activities on the Aude, while the Chemin Vert is also an option for cycling.
