Comigne lies on a slope that forms one of the foothills of the Montagne d’Alaric. Alongside the historic associations of the château and church, the Sentier artistique Ballad'Art en Canto Cocut offers a different focus: the three-kilometre trail passes through pine forests and vineyards, showcasing artworks and views of the landscape. The village’s history and a walk through the countryside therefore offer two distinct interests.

The château and local history

The Château de Comigne occupied a strategically important position: its location allowed it to control one of the few northern approaches to the Corbières through the Alaric massif. The château is therefore associated with a specific historical function.

A coat of arms above a door of the château is attributed to Auger de Gaugenx, who was Abbot of Lagrasse from 1280 to 1308. A fortified settlement in Comigne is mentioned in 1324 and 1351 as Castro de Cominhano. These dated references, too, are part of the village’s history, alongside its connection with the château. Both mentions, from 1324 and 1351, date from after his term as abbot, which ended in 1308.

The church: history and architecture

The church of Comigne is first mentioned in 951 in a bull issued by Pope Agapetus II. It has been recognised as a parish church since 1304 and has served in that capacity ever since. The first mention therefore predates its recognition as a parish church by a considerable margin; the dates mark distinct points in its history. The church also has a distinctive architectural feature: its rectangular choir faces west. A papal bull is an official letter from the pope—in other words, a church document that mentions the church.

Art trail and landscape

The Sentier artistique Ballad'Art en Canto Cocut starts at the car park by Comigne’s community centre. The three-kilometre trail passes through pine forests and vineyards and features around fifty works by professional and amateur artists. The approximate number is important: the art installations may change.

The route offers views of the Montagne Noire, Alaric and the village of Comigne. Visibility of these landscape features depends on conditions. The trail’s length, artworks and views give the walk a variety of highlights. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Sentier culturel de Chante Coucou is another cultural trail in Comigne. Trail conditions can change here too, so take this into account when planning your visit.

This gives you the opportunity to weigh up whether local history or an art walk should play a greater part in your stay.
