Choisy-le-Roi offers several distinct highlights: parkland and architecture, its former ceramics industry, and outdoor recreation. A sports park with a lake and a station on RER Line C round out the picture. During your stay, you can focus on cultural history, exercise, or both.

Parkland and architecture

The Parc municipal in Choisy-le-Roi is a protected, tree-filled urban park with romantic landscaping and traces of the former château. These features form the basis for its protected status. The landscape and the history of the château are connected here, but the historical traces do not limit the park’s character to a single period.

At the entrance to the Parc de la Mairie stand two 18th-century guard pavilions. Louise Bourgeois’ sculpture “Les Bienvenus” is also located there. The Saint-Louis Saint-Nicolas Cathedral adds another architectural feature: Louis XV commissioned it in 1748 and entrusted Ange-Jacques Gabriel with the design. The three sites offer different ways to explore the city’s architectural and artistic history.

Ceramic history and cultural connections

Choisy-le-Roi is also associated with the composer Rouget de Lisle. He lived in the city for ten years and died there on June 26, 1836, at the age of 76. This biographical connection adds a personal dimension to the architectural history, linking someone’s life directly to the place.

A significant part of the city’s industrial history is the now-defunct Faïencerie Boulenger. It was one of Choisy-le-Roi’s largest factories, employing up to 1,400 workers. It produced tableware, decorative items and tiles, which were sold in France and around the world. In 1889, Hippolyte Boulenger secured two-thirds of the Paris Metro’s wall-cladding market and supplied small, white, beveled enamel tiles for the project. The Metro tile is thus a tangible link between the city’s former production and a familiar feature of Parisian architecture.

La Tannerie carries on another aspect of local history: the conservatory for music, dance and visual arts occupies the premises of a former tannery. Here, its present use as an educational institution meets the building’s former function.

Outdoor recreation

The Parc interdépartemental des sports de Choisy Paris-Val-de-Marne offers a range of outdoor activities. These include jogging, cycling and mountain biking, as well as roller skating, skateboarding, climbing and strength training. The park also has a 30-hectare lake. The range of activities lets you focus on being active rather than planning your stay solely around cultural sites.

The Base Nautique de Choisy-le-Roi is also located in the same park. Club members can sail, windsurf, row, and go canoeing and kayaking there. These activities are for club members; if you plan to take part in water sports, check the current access conditions in advance. At the Ferme du Parc des Gondoles, you can visit domestic and farm animals without a guide. As visiting hours may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule before your visit.

Cycling and getting there

EuroVelo 3, La Scandibérique, is a long-distance cycling route along the Seine: the section between Charenton and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges can be covered by bicycle. If you plan to ride this section, check the route conditions before setting off.

Choisy-le-Roi station is served by RER Line C, which connects it with several Paris neighborhoods. Check the timetable before traveling so you can plan your arrival around the activities you have chosen. When choosing a hotel, the city’s history, its leisure activities or the rail connections you need may be deciding factors; the specific features of individual properties should be assessed separately.
