Maisons-Alfort offers a range of ways to spend your stay: museums and local history, architecture and theatre, or plants and walking paths. The Musée Fragonard combines a collection on animal anatomy with a founding history dating back to 1766; the botanical garden was established the same year. Knowing what you want to focus on can help you choose accommodation to suit your interests.

Museums, Gardens and Château de Réghat

The Musée Fragonard was founded in 1766, at the same time as the École royale vétérinaire de Paris. Its collection comprises more than 4,200 objects relating to animals and their anatomy. Visitors can explore without a guide; guided visits are available for groups. The museum therefore offers different ways to visit, while its collection has a clear focus on animals and anatomy.

Since September 2003, the Musée de Maisons-Alfort has been housed in the Château de Réghat. Across 250 m² of exhibition space, it displays collections on the history of Maisons-Alfort and its residents. The château is an estate dating from the 18th century: it once served as a hunting meeting place for Louis XV and as a residence for the Marquise de Pompadour. The garden façades and roofs have been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1979.

The botanical garden was established in 1766. Its collection, significant for both science and heritage conservation, includes honey plants, poisonous plants and medicinal plants. Guided visits are available for school, association, senior and private groups. They also introduce plants and their uses in medicine and nutrition. The focus here is therefore not only on plant species, but also on how they are used.

Church, Theatre and City Walks

The Église Sainte-Agnès is a modernist-inspired church built as part of the “Chantiers du Cardinal” movement and was consecrated in June 1933. It has been classified as a historic monument since 21 December 1984. Its consecration and subsequent classification mark two distinct dates in its history.

The Théâtre Claude Debussy was built in 1981. Its unusual façade, influenced by antiquity, features a half-colonnade, a hanging garden and six ceramic panels depicting music, theatre and dance. The theatre has also served as a cinema since 2016. The Théâtres de Maisons-Alfort comprise DEBUSSY and NECC, and aim to promote a varied, multidisciplinary programme for a broad audience. Family performances are open to everyone aged three and over.

For a city walk, a route starting at Maisons-Alfort–Alfortville station passes through the city’s seven districts. A circular route exploring the architectural and landscape heritage takes in 32 points of interest. The Promenade Paul Cézanne stretches for more than 4 km through Maisons-Alfort. These details offer different points of reference when choosing a route: a starting point, the number of districts, attractions along a circular route and the length of a promenade.

Green Spaces and Practical Information

The Ferme de Maisons-Alfort is dedicated to reintroducing old French breeds of protected farm animals. During the 2025–2029 period, the Parc du Moulin Brûlé, the farm and the green network in the city centre are part of the “Refuges LPO” programme. The farm regularly invites Maisons-Alfort residents to activities such as sheep shearing and “Apprentis-fermiers” days. Its educational programme also teaches residents about country life, nature and wildlife.

The campus of the École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort, which includes the Musée Fragonard, can be reached by metro, RER, bus and car. If you are planning a guided group visit to the museum or garden, check the relevant visitor information; for theatre visits, the performance dates are key.
