At the Étang de la Forge, landscapes and cultural events come together in Martigné-Ferchaud. The body of water stretches along the Semnon, a tributary of the Vilaine. The Étang also hosts the Les Mines d’Or festival and the Les Étincelles Aquatiques show. There are also designated trails and architectural landmarks from various periods. If you are planning a stay, you can get to know Martigné-Ferchaud through three specific highlights: nature at the Étang, different routes and local history.

Nature at the Étang de la Forge

The eastern part of the Étang de la Forge is an ornithological reserve. During bird migration, it welcomes thousands of birds each year; the number varies. If you are particularly interested in bird migration, you can take this seasonal feature into account when choosing when to travel. Bird migration offers a recurring annual point of reference, while the number of birds varies from season to season. This gives the waterside landscape a seasonal focus as well as a geographical setting.

Routes with different points of interest

The Circuit du verger is designated for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. It also includes a viewpoint overlooking the Château du Breil, built around 1850. Before your trip, check whether the route is still designated for your chosen activity; you should check access to the viewpoint locally.

The Circuit Ginière et Araize runs from the Bois de Ginière to the Forêt d’Araize, linking landscapes shaped by human activity with a built environment rich in local history. On the Circuit du verger, the designated activities and view of the Château du Breil provide specific points of reference; on the Circuit Ginière et Araize, these are the named endpoints, the landscape and the built heritage. You can make your choice based on whether you are looking for a designated activity with a viewpoint or a route between named forest areas and a historically shaped cultural landscape.

Buildings from different periods

The present-day Saint-Pierre parish church was built in 1867 to plans by the architect Jacques Mellet. The Manoir de la Mintière dates from the 16th or 17th century and is privately owned. In the Village des Forges in Martigné-Ferchaud, the surviving workers’ and master’s lodgings offer a glimpse of the forges established in the 17th century. These sites provide different historical perspectives: the construction date and architect are specified for Saint-Pierre, a period is given for the Manoir, and the dwellings in the Village des Forges point to the history of the forges. Together, they trace a timeline from the Manoir and 17th-century forges to the parish church of 1867.

Events and when to travel

Since 1994, Les Étincelles Aquatiques has been part of local life in Martigné-Ferchaud as a collaborative artistic project. The show takes place at the Étang de la Forge; performance dates and productions vary. Signs from the main access roads point to the venue. The Les Mines d’Or festival is held at the Étang as an open-air event in a natural setting; the programme and dates vary from one edition to another. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates for your chosen travel period.
