Messanges offers several distinct highlights for a stay: the beach, nature trails and local history. When choosing accommodation in Messanges, you can consider whether Plage Nord, the trails by Étang de Moïsan or the town’s history will shape your stay most.

Plage Nord: Forest, Ocean and Beach Access

Plage Nord borders the Landes forest and offers views of the ocean. It is about 3 km from the centre of Messanges and can be reached via Avenue de la Plage. From the car park, a footpath leads over the dune to the beach; you can also get there by bike via the cycle path along this road. Plage Nord is equipped with facilities and lifeguarded in summer. As lifeguard cover is seasonal, check the current dates before swimming. There is also a restaurant on site.

Circular Trails by Étang de Moïsan

In comparison, the 3.5 km “A la découverte de l’Adour perdu” discovery trail loops around Étang de Moïsan; the 5 km nature trail also circles the pond, additionally following the La Prade stream, and is well signposted. Landes cattle may possibly be spotted on the circular trail by the pond from May to October. Information panels beside the enclosure explain the history of this native cattle breed and the conservation programme dedicated to it. Circular route 16.10 includes a purpose-built boardwalk, a footbridge over the Courant de Messanges and a landscaped wetland forest.

Walking, Cycling and Surfing

Messanges is criss-crossed by several kilometres of cycle paths and walking trails. Lou Caminot Tranquillot is also accessible on foot or by mountain bike. For surfing enthusiasts, La Centrale is a surf spot in Messanges with a beach break. Messanges Surf School offers surfing lessons for children and adults and rents out surf equipment suited to different ability levels. As the service details may change, check the current offer before making plans.

Local History and Rare Visits

One local historical interpretation sees Étang de Moïsan as the surviving remnant of a former, very safe harbour basin formed by swirling currents. For an insight into local history, Dominique offers two walks with different focuses: the 1.5 km walk introduces the history and development of the town centre; the 3.2 km walk passes through the town centre and focuses on regional railway history. The walks therefore differ both in distance and in historical subject.

The Sémaphore of Messanges is open to visitors only very rarely. In summer, a few visitors are occasionally allowed in. Check locally whether a visit is possible before planning one.

Products at the Tourist Office Shop

The Messanges Tourist Office shop stocks 100% local products showcasing the region’s craftsmanship and creativity. These include artisan-made biscuits and chocolate, peanuts, kiwi juices and jams, as well as honey and beekeeping products. Pottery and ceramics are also available. The product selection may change.
