Azur brings together lake views, forest trails and local customs, offering a variety of discoveries. From the pontoon, you can look out over Lac d'Azur; the floating Ponton d'Azur offers a lovely view of Lac de Soustons. The views therefore focus on two different lakes.
Lakes and Water Activities
Water sports are possible on Lac d'Azur, but swimming is prohibited. Check local notices before entering the water. At Azur’s municipal beach, Au fil des flots rents pedal boats, with or without a slide, water scooters, double kayaks, caravelles and windsurfing boards. The beach is 6 km from Soustons. Operations may vary seasonally; check in advance whether rentals are available on your dates.
From the Lac d'Azur pontoon, Naéco offers introductory sessions on stand-up paddleboards and Hawaiian outrigger canoes. The sessions run seasonally. The minimum age is three, and they are also accessible to people with reduced mobility. The activities differ in format: at the municipal beach, the focus is on renting various watercraft, while at the pontoon, it is on an introduction to stand-up paddling and outrigger canoeing.
Forest Trails and Railway Tracks
Two circular routes offer different highlights. The “Circuit du Pont du Loup” trail passes through pine and broadleaf forests, small wooded dunes and along streams; notable cork oaks line the route. The “Traces de l'Ancienne Voie Ferrée” trail winds through a maritime pine forest and offers views of the surrounding open landscapes. It also leads to the former Dax–Azur railway line. If vegetation is your main interest, the first route offers a varied landscape of forests, streams and cork oaks. The second combines maritime pine forest and views of open landscapes with a direct link to the former railway line.
Local History and Customs
A fountain in Azur was a resting place on the Way of St. James in the Middle Ages. Two customs provide specific dates to help plan your trip: on July 14, bread and cheese are traditionally given away in Azur. During the Maïade in May, a colorful pole decorated with flowers and ivy is erected in front of the home of an honored person. If you would like to experience one of these customs, you can plan your trip around it. The two occasions take place in different months.
Bus Connection to Messanges
Free YEGO buses connect Azur with Messanges and run several times each afternoon. Stops are located at the campsites and in Azur town center. The service is seasonal; check the current operating days and route before traveling. For planning your journey, the listed stops in the town center and at the campsites are useful reference points.
When choosing your travel dates, it is worth distinguishing between seasonal operating schedules and the dates of local customs: check the water activities and YEGO services for your travel period; the Maïade takes place in May, while bread and cheese are given away on July 14.
