Castelnau-Chalosse combines architectural heritage and rural discoveries, offering insights into former crafts and traditional activities. The present-day Château de Castelnau overlooks the Luy valley; in the town centre, the Maison de la Vannerie explores the history of basketry. During your stay, you can choose to focus on architecture, landscapes, crafts or individual attractions.

Château and church: different architectural histories

The present-day Château de Castelnau was rebuilt in 1895 and overlooks the Luy valley. The parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine preserves some elements of a 12th-century Romanesque church. It was probably almost entirely rebuilt in the 15th century; two side chapels were added in the 16th century. The château is defined by a clearly dated reconstruction, while the church brings together Romanesque elements and later building phases. Visitors interested in architecture will therefore find different periods represented in Castelnau-Chalosse rather than a single architectural history.

Basketry and local history

In the town centre, the Maison de la Vannerie traces the importance of basketry as an economic activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Exhibits include baskets, wicker containers, eel traps and photographs from earlier times. The Maison thus connects tangible objects with an account of the craft's economic role. Guided visits are offered in July and August, led by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic host. If you plan to make this seasonal visit a firm part of your itinerary, check the dates before travelling.

Landscapes and traditional activities

The Circuit de la plaine du Luy is a hilly circular route with varied landscapes and notable examples of architectural heritage. It also offers very attractive views over the Luy plain. Here, landscapes and architectural heritage are part of the same route—an ideal option if you would like to include both in your trip.

At the Quiller de 9, visitors can discover a traditional game and receive guidance from passionate players. The equipment consists of nine large beechwood pins, a walnut-wood ball and twelve pieces. The game is played on a square earthen court or outdoors on a so-called plantier. Visits are listed for Friday afternoons; as this is a recurring event, check the details before travelling.

Tastings and horses

The Ferme Auberge Le Vieux Chêne invites visitors to sample its specialities. Confirm the offer before travelling if you would like to make it a firm part of your plans. Since 2008, the Ferme équestre de Bertron has been based at an exceptional site in the rural surroundings of Castelnau-Chalosse in the Landes, where it shares its passion for horses. If you would like to include a horse-related activity in your plans, check the specific options before booking.
