Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx combines experiences in nature with remarkable architecture. Between the wetlands of the Barthes de l’Adour and the wooded slopes, the Jardin buissonnier offers a hands-on introduction to the landscape. Walking trails reveal further perspectives: along the way, you’ll encounter both native trees and traditional houses of the Barthes. If you’d like to add architecture to your stay, the Château de Saint-Martin and the Villa Saint-Jean offer two very different historical highlights.

Discover nature and choose your route

Le Jardin buissonnier is a 2.5-hectare natural area between the wetlands of the Barthes de l’Adour and a forest on the slopes. On-site attractions include pond information stations about the life cycles of dragonflies and amphibians, a barefoot trail, flower beds, a heathland area and a vegetable garden. Information about forest ecology complements the nature themes. Alongside the individual garden areas, the habitats and how they relate to one another are also a focus.

On the Les Coteaux de Riston route, you can spot black alders, pedunculate oaks, chestnut trees and maritime pines. The route also offers views of traditional houses typical of the natural wetlands of the Barthes de l’Adour. It therefore combines nature-watching with an impression of regional architectural styles. Another option is the Les Barthes de Saint-Martin route: it is four kilometres long, rated easy and marked in blue.

The Les Croque Chemins association offers hiking, Nordic walking, snowshoeing and health walks in Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx. Tour formats range from half-day and full-day walks to weekend trips and excursions lasting several days. This lets you choose between a single half or full day of walking and longer tours. Dates may vary; if you want an organised tour to structure your stay, check the current programme in advance.

Cycling can also help you plan your route around the area: a network of cycle paths connects the town centre with the new neighbourhood, runs along the Adour and provides access to the Vélodyssée and the voie verte along the maritime Adour as far as Rivière. Walking and cycling offer different ways to explore, from a nature stroll or a longer hike to routes by bike.

Historic architecture in the townscape

The Château de Saint-Martin is listed as a historic monument. Its striking architectural features include a grand staircase with painted decoration, considered one of the finest achievements of regional classical architecture. The western wing, with two towers rebuilt around 1600, is connected to a pavilion that houses the monumental staircase. This pavilion is part of a renovation project that began around 1650.

The Villa Saint-Jean offers a different historical highlight. It is listed in its entirety as a historic monument, including its furnishings, outbuilding and garden. It was remodelled between 1926 and 1930; its architecture combines the style of houses in Labourd with Spanish and modern influences. While the staircase, towers and pavilion shape the architectural description of the château, the villa’s particular appeal lies in this blend of different styles.

Market and local produce

The Marché de Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx takes place on Saturday mornings and has around twenty stalls selling local produce and international dishes. This mix gives the market a broad culinary profile. Market dates and the selection of stalls can change, so it’s worth checking the latest details if you’re planning a visit.

Another place to find local produce is FERM’AVENIR, a farm shop in Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx. There, nine farmers from the south of the Landes département, Béarn and the Basque Country bring together their produce and expertise. Together with the market, it offers a glimpse of two different ways of finding regional food: the Saturday morning stalls and the cooperatively run farm shop.
