Bascons offers a variety of reasons to visit: the Church of Saint-Amand, with its preserved defensive features; chapels and a pilgrimage; the Course Landaise tradition; and wildlife watching at the retention lake on the stream “des Longs”. When planning your visit, you can consider these highlights separately: architecture and religious heritage sit alongside an annual pilgrimage and a natural area with observation points.

Saint-Amand: a church with preserved defensive features

The Church of Saint-Amand dates from the 13th century and is classified as a historic monument. A watchtower and a small watch turret remain from its former fortifications; the small turret served to defend the gate. The south wall also has loopholes and machicolations. These features illustrate different aspects of defensive architecture: the watchtower belongs to the former fortifications, the small watch turret is specifically associated with defending the gate, and the south wall adds further defensive features.

The interior also has its own artistic interest: three large polychrome wooden statues stand on the partition between the nave and the south aisle. They represent Faith, Hope and Charity. Polychrome means decorated in several colours. Their precise location and the virtues they depict offer a different perspective on the church from its fortification history. The building can therefore be understood both through its defensive features and through the religious significance of the statues.

Chapels, pilgrimage and historic sites

The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Course Landaise is in the Bostens district, about four kilometres from the centre of Bascons. A pilgrimage of the Coursayres takes place at the chapel every year on Ascension Day. If you are planning to visit Bascons specifically for this occasion, check the date for the relevant year. The approximate distance places the chapel in the Bostens district; it is also a distinct point of interest within the town’s religious heritage.

The Chapel of Saint-Amand is a separate site: it was built in 1946 beside the spring of the same name, which is believed to have miraculous properties. The Jean-de-Lahourtique bullring is another historic landmark and was inaugurated on 15 August 1936. The church, chapels and bullring are different buildings with different dates; the years help distinguish them chronologically without combining them into a single history.

Course Landaise and the museum’s status

The Musée de la course landaise is devoted entirely to preserving documents and objects relating to Course Landaise, the Gascon bullfighting tradition. The museum is currently closed indefinitely. Plan a visit only after checking its status again. The museum’s subject also offers a distinct cultural focus alongside the church architecture and historic buildings.

Wildlife watching and walking

The Observatoire de l'avifaune has three observation points around the retention lake on the stream “des Longs”. Wildlife can be watched there, and the area is also notable for the richness of its flora. A nature-focused trip can therefore take in both wildlife and plant life. The three observation points belong to the observatory; the flora is an additional feature of the area.

Another activity is the “Circuit de randonnée pour découvrir Bascons” walking trail, which is approximately 13.8 kilometres long. This approximate distance helps you assess the trail as a separate point in your plans. Check local trail conditions before setting out. This lets you factor the walk into your travel plans without equating it with the observation points or assuming any particular connection between the destinations.

Bascons appeals to travellers who want to choose between a historic building, religious tradition and nature watching. The pilgrimage takes place on Ascension Day, while the museum’s status should be checked and local conditions are important for the walking trail. These different timing and practical considerations can help you decide which focus is right for you.
