Villa Mairea in Noormarkku is considered one of the leading international works of 20th-century architecture. Sammallahdenmäki is located in Lappi, near Rauma, in Lower Satakunta. The archaeological site comprises 36 Bronze Age burial cairns spread across 36 hectares and was added to the World Heritage List in 1999. From 1 May to 31 October, it can be visited free of charge and independently. There is no maintenance in winter. Industrial History in Several Places
Kauttua Ironworks in Eura is a living village with a continuous industrial history. The village was founded in 1689, when the first ironworks was established there. Another highlight is Leineperi Ironworks in Ulvila. It is one of Finland’s best-preserved and most complete ironworks. Blacksmithing is still practised in its forge. Together with Kauttua and Leineperi, these places illustrate different connections to the region’s industrial history, without needing to be combined into a single sightseeing route.
Coast, Birdlife and Bog Trails
Säppi Lighthouse Island is located in the municipality of Eurajoki, on the coast of Satakunta along the Gulf of Bothnia. The island is designated as nationally significant built cultural heritage and is also a very important resting place for migratory birds. Cultural heritage and birdlife thus come together here; this combination may be especially interesting to travellers who choose destinations based on more than one theme.
Yyteri Beach is a nature reserve and part of the Natura network of protected areas. The hiking trails there pass through a variety of landscapes: past the sea and sand dunes, through pine and old spruce forests, over bog crossings and sandy forest paths, and to nature observation towers. Stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing are also available at the beach. This allows nature watching and watersports to be considered as different interests for a stay in the coastal region.
There are two different trail options for bog and birdwatching. On the northern edge of Isosuo, an illustrated, two-kilometre nature trail introduces visitors to life in the bog; along the way, there is a four-metre-high nature observation tower. In Puurijärvi–Isosuo National Park, a marked trail just under a kilometre long leads from the Kärjenkallio car park to a birdwatching tower. An information shelter along the trail provides information about the birds and plants of Puurijärvi.
Cycling and Music in July
The Geobike Hämeenkangas mountain biking route starts in Jämi and leads to trails and natural attractions in the surrounding area. The Geopark Satakunta Bikepacking Route passes through the centre of Jämijärvi and can be used to visit Hämeenkangas and other natural attractions in North Satakunta, including Kauhaneva–Pohjankangas and Lauhanvuori National Parks. The descriptions therefore offer two different starting points for planning a cycling trip: a starting point in Jämi and a regional route through the centre of Jämijärvi.
For music trips, Pori Jazz is a seasonal highlight: in July, music is played at the main concerts and on various stages from the afternoon until late at night.
